Role of Marine Science Instructor

We are seeking enthusiastic and knowledgeable science educators to lead our engaging, hands-on summer programs.

Session Availability: Please specify your availability in your application. Instructors may be selected for one or multiple sessions based on their availability. Options for residential, online, and commuter participation are available, with accommodations and meals provided for in-person sessions.

Marine Science Curriculum Overview:

Participants in the Marine Science program will explore the ocean, one of the planet's most mysterious environments. This camp employs a multi-disciplinary approach, integrating chemistry, oceanography, ecology, and marine biology to uncover the wonders of the sea and its inhabitants.

The week will commence with an investigation into water properties and their influence on oceanic currents and ecosystems, followed by an exploration of marine life, including food webs and adaptations. Special focus will be given to survival techniques such as mimicry, camouflage, and bioluminescence. Campers will also examine the anatomy and physiology of ocean predators, with opportunities for hands-on dissections of fish, squid, and sharks to compare their biological structures and ecological roles.

As the week progresses, we will address human impacts on marine environments. Campers will simulate an environmental disaster, such as an oil spill, and brainstorm cleanup strategies for both aquatic ecosystems and affected wildlife. Additional studies will include water pH, ocean acidification, and its effects on marine organisms.

Instructor Responsibilities:

On-site Responsibilities: Instructors will be responsible for delivering the Education Unlimited curriculum, supervising campers in various settings, organizing and leading laboratory activities, and coordinating a final showcase of student projects at the end of the program. Instructors will also track student progress and submit necessary reports to the camp director.

Beyond teaching duties, instructors are expected to assist the camp director with supervision, recreational activities, and some administrative responsibilities. Candidates should demonstrate maturity, reliability, and the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues. Instructors will also serve as mentors and guide students during field trips and excursions, ensuring the health and safety of all participants while achieving educational goals.

Instructors have the option to commute daily or stay overnight on campus during residential programs. Overnight staff will receive full accommodations and are expected to assist with evening supervision tasks.

Qualifications:

Ideal candidates are typically year-round science educators, graduate students in science, or individuals with substantial teaching or mentoring experience in relevant fields.

  • Minimum of 2 years of science teaching experience or significant subject matter expertise.
  • Experience working with middle school, high school, or college students in an educational environment.
  • Bachelor's degree required; preference for candidates with advanced degrees.
  • A strong passion for science education.
  • Professional demeanor and self-motivation.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
