Position: Reading Intervention Specialist Pursuing Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT) Certification

Job Objectives:
  • In alignment with the Alabama Literacy Act, a Reading Intervention Specialist will be designated at a specific school to deliver intensive, diagnostic, and tailored reading support to students who have faced retention in third grade or have advanced to fourth grade under a "Good Cause Exemption" as per the guidelines of the Alabama Literacy Act.
  • The specialist will employ a dyslexia-focused intervention program recognized by the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC) and the Alabama Literacy Task Force (LTF). Initial funding for intervention programs and materials will be provided by the Alabama State Department of Education through a formal agreement.
Education and Qualifications:
  1. Master's degree from an accredited institution.
  2. Completion of LETRS Early Childhood and/or LETRS K-12 training.
  3. Valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate in Early Childhood, Elementary Education, or Special Education Collaborative.
  4. A minimum of three years of successful experience in teaching reading or related subjects with effective classroom management, providing targeted intervention using an approved dyslexia-specific program.
  5. Ability to meet employment suitability criteria under the Alabama Child Protection Act.
  6. Strong oral and written communication skills.
  7. Physical capability to fulfill job responsibilities.
  8. Reliability in attendance and punctuality.
  9. Other qualifications as required by the Board.
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  1. Comprehensive understanding of the Alabama Literacy Act to effectively interpret policies and analyze student data.
  2. Commitment to professional development aimed at achieving CALT certification.
  3. Ability to engage students in small-group instruction to fulfill clinical teaching hour requirements for CALT certification.
  4. Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with colleagues and parents.
  5. Adaptability to changes within the district and school environment.
  6. Capability to lead professional development on dyslexia awareness for educators and parents.
  7. Effective communication with supervisors and ability to accept feedback.
  8. Skill in managing multiple responsibilities efficiently.
  9. Proficiency in technology to implement diverse educational programs and analyze data.
  10. Experience in various effective reading intervention strategies for students with dyslexia and struggling readers.
Key Responsibilities:
  1. Actively participate in all scheduled training sessions related to Multisensory Language Education (MSLE) for CALT certification.
  2. Administer universal reading assessments to all students.
  3. Contribute to the Problem-Solving Team (PST) for students identified as having reading challenges, assisting in the development of improvement plans.
  4. Utilize screening tools to assess students for dyslexia characteristics.
  5. Conduct additional diagnostic assessments to identify students' strengths and needs.
  6. Deliver targeted, structured, multi-sensory language instruction to students requiring dyslexia-specific intervention.
  7. Collaborate with classroom teachers to ensure consistency in reading strategies and effective communication with parents.
  8. Serve as a resource for classroom teachers in implementing Structured Literacy.
  9. Work with administration on student scheduling to minimize disruption to classroom instruction.
  10. Monitor the reading progress of students receiving intervention.
  11. Provide reading support during summer learning initiatives.
Accountability Documentation:
  1. Maintain required documentation and records as per established guidelines.
  2. Submit intervention schedules and class enrollment lists by specified deadlines.
  3. Record attendance and assessment data for progress monitoring.
Performance Responsibilities:
  1. Support the school system's vision and goals.
  2. Utilize technology effectively in the classroom.
  3. Engage in school activities and professional growth.
  4. Maintain confidentiality regarding student and school matters.
  5. Respond to inquiries in a timely manner.
  6. Ensure proper care of school resources.
