Position Summary

Denver Botanic Gardens is seeking a Full-Time Exhibits Assistant Technician within our Exhibitions Department. This role is essential in assisting with the preparation, construction, installation, and removal of both indoor and outdoor art exhibitions. The technician will create mounts and displays for various artworks while ensuring meticulous attention to detail and quality in execution. This position operates in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, collaborating with a team dedicated to excellence in all exhibition aspects. The typical work schedule is 32 hours per week, with potential variations in shifts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitates the packing, crating, and transportation of artworks and related materials.
  • Collaborates with staff, volunteers, and contractors for the installation and de-installation of artwork in diverse settings, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Measures artworks and planned placements to assist in exhibition layout design.
  • Fabricates and aids in the creation of museum-quality custom mounts, pedestals, crates, temporary walls, and other display materials.
  • Works with the Exhibitions team to ensure all fabricated elements meet the specific requirements of artworks and lenders, as well as design and budget constraints.
  • Handles and moves artworks across various media, accommodating unique needs and specifications.
  • Assists with outdoor artwork siting assessments, lighting arrangements, and signage installations.
  • Supports the maintenance and ongoing care of exhibitions.
  • Maintains positive working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Exhibits a positive, solution-oriented attitude when interacting with visitors and members.
  • Regular attendance is mandatory, with limited remote work options available at management's discretion.
  • All employees must align with the mission of connecting people with plants, particularly those from the Rocky Mountain region and similar areas globally.

Qualifications

  • Proficient in reading technical drawings and plans to fabricate products accurately; attention to detail is crucial.
  • Skilled in using various hand tools and taking precise measurements.
  • Knowledge of fabrication materials, including wood, metal, and plastics.
  • Experience operating shop tools such as table saws, miter saws, and band saws.
  • Physical capability to climb ladders, lift up to 80 pounds, and stand for extended periods.
  • Familiarity with art handling and 3D design or modeling software is advantageous.
  • Demonstrated excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain composure under pressure and manage stressful situations effectively.
  • Flexibility to adapt plans as necessary throughout the workday.
  • Willingness to work a varied schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Willingness to work overtime as required.
  • Must represent the Gardens positively at all times.
  • Commitment to safety and cooperation with colleagues and the public is essential.
  • Experience operating equipment such as pallet jacks and scissor lifts is preferred.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required; bachelor's degree preferred. Current students pursuing degrees in art or museum studies are encouraged to apply. A combination of education and relevant experience is acceptable.
  • A minimum of 2 years of carpentry or fabrication experience is required.
  • Experience in an art museum, public garden, or similar cultural environment is desirable but not mandatory.
  • A valid driver's license is required; ability to operate a 16' - 22' box truck is preferred.

Travel Requirements

Up to 10% travel may be necessary, requiring the ability to reach remote locations where environmental conditions may vary significantly.
