Department Overview:

The Office of Disability Access is dedicated to ensuring that students with disabilities have equitable access to all university programs and services. Our mission is to collaborate with faculty and campus partners to promote inclusion and provide innovative solutions for accessible education.

Role Summary:

The Sign Language Interpreter will facilitate communication access for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students in various academic settings. This role requires proficiency in American Sign Language and spoken English, ensuring that all communication needs are met effectively. The interpreter will hold certification from either the BEI of Texas or the national Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID/NIC) and adhere to the professional standards set forth by these organizations.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of three years of interpreting experience in diverse community settings.
  • Certification from BEI of Texas or RID/NIC.

Key Skills and Competencies:

  • Fluency in American Sign Language and English.
  • Ability to adapt to the communication styles of various Deaf individuals.
  • Strong listening and comprehension skills.
  • Ability to maintain focus and concentration in dynamic environments.
  • Commitment to ethical standards and professional conduct.

Preferred Experience:

  • Five years of interpreting experience at the post-secondary level.
  • Flexibility in scheduling, including availability for evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide sign language interpretation in classrooms and related academic settings.
  • Assist with scheduling interpreter services and maintain communication with relevant personnel.
  • Participate in professional development activities to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Support outreach initiatives related to Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities.

Work Schedule:

Monday to Friday, with occasional evenings and weekends as required.
