Job Summary:

The role of the Sign Language Interpreter is crucial in providing effective communication access within the academic environment. This position is dedicated to ensuring that Deaf and Hard of Hearing students can fully participate in university programs and activities. The interpreter will facilitate communication through American Sign Language or Spoken English, tailored to the needs of the individuals involved.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver sign language interpretation services in classroom settings and other academic environments.
  • Maintain professional certification through recognized bodies and adhere to the established Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to ensure compliance with accessibility standards and promote an inclusive educational atmosphere.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to enhance interpreting skills and knowledge of best practices.
  • Provide support and guidance to students regarding available services and accommodations.

Qualifications:

Applicants should possess a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution along with a minimum of three years of interpreting experience in diverse settings. Certification through the BEI of Texas or the national Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID/NIC) is required.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Proficient in American Sign Language and English, with the ability to adapt to various communication styles.
  • Strong listening and comprehension skills to accurately convey messages.
  • Ability to maintain focus and manage distractions effectively during interpretation.
  • Knowledge of cultural nuances and ethical standards relevant to the interpreting profession.

Work Schedule:

This position typically operates Monday through Friday, with occasional evening and weekend commitments based on the interpreting schedule.
