Department Overview:

The Office of Disability Access is dedicated to preventing discrimination based on disability and enhancing student independence. Our mission is to collaborate with faculty and campus partners to ensure equitable access to university programs and services for students with disabilities.

Role Summary:

The Sign Language Interpreter is responsible for facilitating communication access within academic settings at the University of North Texas. This role requires proficiency in American Sign Language and Spoken English to effectively meet the needs of diverse consumers. The interpreter must hold certification from either the BEI of Texas or the national Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID/NIC) and adhere to the professional Code of Conduct.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of three years of full-time interpreting experience in community settings.
  • Certification through BEI of Texas or RID/NIC.

Preferred Experience:

  • Five years of interpreting experience at the post-secondary level.
  • Flexibility in scheduling, including availability for evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain communication with departmental leadership regarding interpreting assignments.
  • Assist in scheduling interpreter services and contribute to skill development.
  • Participate in outreach activities related to Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities.
  • Provide interpretation services in both classroom and non-classroom settings.
  • Engage in professional development through conferences and training.

Work Schedule:

Monday to Friday, with potential evening and weekend commitments based on scheduling needs.
