Department Overview:

The Office of Disability Access (ODA) is dedicated to ensuring equitable access for students with disabilities. Our mission is to collaborate with faculty and campus partners to facilitate an inclusive educational environment that promotes independence and innovation.

Role Summary:

The Sign Language Interpreter will provide essential communication access within academic settings at the University of North Texas. This role requires proficiency in American Sign Language and Spoken English to accommodate the diverse needs of students. The interpreter must hold certification from either the BEI of Texas or the national Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID/NIC) and adhere to the professional Code of Conduct.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution
  • Minimum of 3 years of interpreting experience in varied community settings
  • Certification through BEI of Texas or RID/NIC

Key Skills:

  • Fluency in American Sign Language and English
  • Ability to adapt to the communication needs of diverse Deaf individuals
  • Strong listening and comprehension skills
  • Excellent interpreting and decision-making abilities
  • Professional conduct and ethical standards

Preferred Experience:

  • Five years of interpreting experience at the post-secondary level
  • Flexibility for varied scheduling

Responsibilities:

  • Provide sign language interpretation in classroom and non-classroom settings
  • Maintain communication with departmental leadership regarding interpreting assignments
  • Participate in professional development activities to uphold certification
  • Assist in scheduling interpreter services as needed
  • Engage in outreach activities related to Deaf/Hard of Hearing communities

Work Schedule:

Standard hours are Monday to Friday, with occasional evenings and weekends based on scheduling needs.
