POSITION OVERVIEW:

We are in search of optical physicists with a range of competencies in optical metrology, laser analysis, and optical engineering. As an Optical Physicist at AOSense, you will be responsible for the design, prototyping, construction, and evaluation of laser systems intended for portable atom optic devices utilized in inertial navigation, geophysical applications, and precise timekeeping. You will play a key role in transitioning to compact and integrated photonic systems for next-generation sensors.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop compact laser systems tailored for atom-based sensors and frequency standards.
  • Design, construct, and evaluate optical frequency combs and high-finesse cavities.
  • Assess the long-term stability of photonic systems in variable environments.
  • Analyze laser performance metrics such as linewidth, beam quality, and longevity.
  • Examine optics, optical materials, and associated components.
  • Utilize optical design software to model laser beam propagation.
  • Facilitate the transition of photonic devices into manufacturing processes.
  • Contribute to research proposals aimed at advancing development and applications.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proven expertise in lasers, optics, optomechanics, electro-optics, and acousto-optics.
  • Hands-on experience with optical testing equipment.
  • Familiarity with single-mode optical fiber systems.
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot electronic control systems for photonic devices.
  • Candidates should excel in a dynamic work environment.
  • U.S. Government contracts necessitate that applicants are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Optical frequency metrology, including optical frequency combs and high-finesse cavities.
  • Experience with ultrafast lasers and amplifiers.
  • Knowledge of laser frequency stabilization techniques.
  • Familiarity with narrow-linewidth diode lasers.
  • Expertise in integrated photonics design and fabrication.
  • Experience in micro-optic and diode chip assembly and packaging.
  • Proficiency in engineering software packages such as Zemax, FRED, SolidWorks, or COMSOL.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

A Master's degree or Ph.D. (preferred), or equivalent professional experience is required.
