Your Role
We are seeking a principled and hands-on leader with exceptional emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills. The ideal candidate will possess unwavering intellectual integrity, humility, and sound judgment, adept at navigating complex projects with diverse stakeholders and competing priorities. As the Director of Research, you will spearhead a team of scientists dedicated to inventing the next generation of revolutionary electrode materials and other product families for commercial use in cutting-edge lithium-ion batteries. You will collaborate closely with the CTO and various teams, driving forward innovative product developments aimed at ensuring high-quality manufacturing on an automotive scale.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead a team of scientists in the discovery and development of next-generation electrode materials and their synthesis pathways. Collaborate effectively with the CTO, Strategy, Product, Technology, and other leadership to align the team's efforts with clear objectives and ensure they have the necessary resources for success.
  • Identify new scientific, process, characterization, and collaboration opportunities to enhance team capabilities and accelerate time-to-market.
  • Oversee the recruitment, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding of exceptional talent to broaden the team's capacity and diversity. Maintain systems and processes that improve team efficiency.
  • Provide guidance and support to your team, fostering motivation through the challenges of ambitious, mission-driven research. Establish clear performance expectations and offer regular feedback, mentoring team members to aid their professional growth.
  • Encourage a culture of psychological safety and accountability within the team, promoting active participation in innovative scientific endeavors, constructive discussions, and collaborative efforts to achieve critical program milestones.
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated success in innovation and product commercialization.
  • Technical expertise in one or more of the following areas: inorganic material synthesis, metallo-organic synthesis, silicon or silicon-based materials, carbon materials, nanostructured materials synthesis, nanocomposite synthesis, nanoscale materials characterization, electrochemistry, and batteries.
  • Willingness to engage in laboratory work to investigate and resolve issues.
  • Ability to achieve preliminary results with limited resources and adapt goals and priorities while maintaining team motivation.
  • Extensive experience (10+ years preferred) in leading large teams (5-50 PhD and MS level scientists or engineers), fostering their professional development.
  • Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, materials science, or related fields.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to pass a respirator fit test and wear respiratory protection regularly.
  • Ability to navigate long distances and remain stationary for extended periods.

Work Schedule
Regular Shift: Monday - Friday, 9:00 am - 6:00 pm

Compensation
The starting base salary for this position ranges from $204,000 to $258,000. Actual compensation will depend on various factors, including education, experience, and skills. This salary is part of Sila's competitive Total Rewards package, which may include benefits, perks, equity, and bonuses. The salary range is subject to change.
