Your Role
We are in search of a principled and hands-on leader who possesses high emotional intelligence, exceptional interpersonal skills, and a strong sense of integrity. As the Director of Research, you will spearhead a team of scientists focused on inventing next-generation electrode materials and other product lines for commercial use in cutting-edge lithium-ion batteries. You will collaborate closely with the Chief Technology Officer and other key teams to drive innovative product developments that ensure high-quality manufacturing at an automotive scale.
- Lead a team of scientists in the discovery and development of advanced electrode materials and their synthesis pathways. Collaborate effectively with leadership across various departments to align team efforts with organizational goals.
- Identify and pursue new scientific, process, and collaboration opportunities to enhance team capabilities and accelerate product development timelines.
- Oversee the recruitment and onboarding of talented individuals to strengthen team diversity and expertise. Maintain systems that promote operational efficiency.
- Provide guidance and support to your team, fostering a culture of accountability and motivation through the challenges of ambitious research initiatives. Set clear performance expectations and offer constructive feedback.
- Encourage a psychologically safe environment that promotes creative scientific exploration, open dialogue, and collaborative efforts to achieve critical project milestones.
- Demonstrated success in innovation and product commercialization.
- Expertise in one or more of the following areas: inorganic material synthesis, metallo-organic synthesis, silicon-based materials, carbon materials, nanostructured materials, nanocomposite synthesis, nanoscale materials characterization, electrochemistry, and battery technology.
- Willingness to engage in hands-on laboratory work to troubleshoot and resolve issues.
- Ability to achieve results with limited resources while maintaining team morale and focus.
- Extensive experience (preferably 10+ years) in leading sizable teams of scientists or engineers, fostering their professional development.
- Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, materials science, or a related field.
- Must be able to pass a respirator fit test and wear respiratory protection as required.
- Ability to move between locations and remain stationary for extended periods.
Compensation
The starting base salary for this position ranges from $204,000 to $258,000, influenced by factors such as education, experience, and skill set. This base salary is part of Sila's comprehensive Total Rewards package, which may include benefits, equity, and bonuses.
