Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Bus Mechanic to join our team at Jefferson County Schools. As a key member of our transportation department, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable operation of our school buses.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain a current Department of Transportation (DOT) physical or Alabama School Bus physical, as required by Board Policy.
  • Three years of experience in a transportation bus shop or three years outside of a transportation bus shop as a bus/truck mechanic or Associates Degree from an accredited college with a degree in Automotive Service Technology or Diesel Mechanics.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Alabama bus driver license (BDL) with P/S endorsement and commercial driver's license (CDL) within six months of employment.
  • Maintain Alabama School Bus Mechanic certification within the appropriate time frame available by the State Department of Pupil Transportation.
  • Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No.
  • Competent written and verbal communication skills; proficient computer skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership, supervision, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to operate and maintain needed tools and diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical problems, to implement preventive maintenance programs, and to follow safety and recommended rules for efficient shop operations.

  • Physical strength and agility to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to exert up to 75 pounds of force.
  • Ability to furnish a personal set of appropriate mechanic's tools.
  • Ability, agility, and stamina to engage in prolonged sitting or standing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning, and reaching.
  • Ability and willingness to work indoors and outdoors year-round in noisy, crowded environments, and inclement weather.
  • Ability and willingness to work after hours, weekends, or holidays when necessary.
  • Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
Requirements
