Position Title - Certified Mechanic

Supervisors: Shop Supervisor for Transportation, Assistant Director of Operations for Transportation, Executive Director of Operations

Objective:
  • To deliver outstanding maintenance services for all vehicles within the Alabama Department of Education fleet.
  • To support transportation staff in identifying, preventing, and resolving transportation issues or hazardous conditions.
Essential Qualifications:
  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Must hold a current Department of Transportation (DOT) physical or Alabama School Bus physical as mandated by policy.
  3. Three (3) years of experience in a transportation maintenance environment or three (3) years as a bus/truck mechanic outside of such an environment, or an Associate's Degree in Automotive Service Technology or Diesel Mechanics from an accredited institution.
  4. Possess and maintain a valid Alabama bus driver license (BDL) with P/S endorsement and a commercial driver's license (CDL) within six (6) months of hire.
  5. Maintain Alabama School Bus Mechanic certification within the timeframe established by the State Department of Pupil Transportation.
  6. Ability to meet employment suitability criteria under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999.
  7. Strong written and verbal communication skills; proficient in computer usage.
  8. Demonstrated leadership, supervisory, and decision-making capabilities.
  9. Ability to operate and maintain necessary tools and diagnostic equipment.
  10. Skilled in diagnosing mechanical issues, implementing preventive maintenance programs, and adhering to safety protocols for efficient operations.
  11. Physical capability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  12. Ability to exert up to 75 pounds of force.
  13. Must provide a personal set of appropriate mechanic's tools.
  14. Ability to engage in prolonged sitting or standing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning, and reaching.
  15. Willingness to work indoors and outdoors year-round in various environmental conditions.
  16. Availability to work after hours, weekends, or holidays as required.
  17. Consistent punctuality and attendance.
  18. Other qualifications as deemed necessary by the Board.
Key Responsibilities:
  1. Exhibit support for the educational system and its vision, goals, and priorities.
  2. Conduct monthly safety inspections on vehicles as required by state regulations.
  3. Perform maintenance by diagnosing, servicing, and refurbishing systems on all vehicles owned by the Alabama Department of Education.
  4. Maintain written records of all maintenance performed on the fleet.
  5. Assist with minor automotive body repairs as needed.
  6. Support fellow mechanics as assigned.
  7. Keep the service area clean, organized, and safe, ensuring service vehicles are washed and maintained regularly.
  8. Maintain an accurate inventory of tools and supplies.
  9. Utilize and safeguard tools, equipment, and materials responsibly.
  10. Request necessary supplies and equipment to fulfill duties.
  11. Respond to road calls as necessary.
  12. Drive vehicles and transport individuals as directed.
  13. Act promptly in emergency situations.
  14. Prioritize safety in all mechanical maintenance tasks; remove any vehicle deemed unsafe from service.
  15. Return vehicles to service only after all maintenance issues have been resolved.
  16. Engage in training to enhance skills and knowledge as directed.
  17. Perform all duties with professionalism and courtesy.
  18. Maintain confidentiality regarding workplace matters.
  19. Proactively identify potential issues or opportunities for improvement.
  20. Report any unusual events or work irregularities to the appropriate supervisory personnel.
  21. Respond to inquiries and feedback in a constructive manner.
  22. Submit reports and records accurately and punctually.
  23. Adhere to school system rules, policies, and applicable laws.
  24. Report absences and take leave according to established procedures.
  25. Perform additional job-related duties as assigned by supervisors.
Employment Terms: As determined by the Board and applicable state law.
