Job Title - Transportation Route Specialist

Supervisor(s): Director of Operations for Transportation, Assistant Director of Operations for Transportation.

Job Objective:
  • To support the planning and execution of safe and effective bus routes for all students.
Essential Qualifications:
  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Possess and maintain a valid Alabama bus driver license (BDL) and commercial driver's license (CDL) with P/S endorsement as required for bus routes, including special education recertification when applicable.
  3. Maintain a current Department of Transportation (DOT) physical or Alabama School bus physical as mandated by Board Policy.
  4. Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999.
  5. Provide certification or documentation of physical health/abilities as necessary.
  6. Demonstrate aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities. Proficient in word processing, spreadsheet applications, and computer skills.
  7. Pass a successful drug screening and be subject to ongoing drug testing.
  8. Exhibit competent written and verbal communication skills.
  9. Ability to communicate professionally on a daily basis with parents, drivers, and local school administration.
  10. Ability to utilize transportation, routing, GPS tracking software, and other relevant technology.
  11. Physical capability to perform all duties and responsibilities as outlined by state and federal regulations, including but not limited to pre-trip inspections, post-trip inspections, and bus evacuations.
  12. Ability to identify and resolve issues as a collaborative team member.
  13. Willingness to work after hours, weekends, or holidays as needed.
  14. Demonstrate punctuality and regular attendance.
  15. Any alternatives to the above qualifications as required by the Board.
Performance Responsibilities and Key Functions:
  1. Show support for the educational system, its vision, goals, and priorities.
  2. Coordinate routing for designated feeder patterns and/or clusters of schools.
  3. Manage re-certification and scheduling for designated feeder patterns and/or clusters of schools.
  4. Oversee physical paperwork for designated feeder patterns and/or clusters of schools.
  5. Investigate incidents and manage driver drug testing following incidents in designated feeder patterns and/or clusters of schools.
  6. Maintain logs for extra duty drivers for selected school groupings.
  7. Assist in the recruitment and training of transportation personnel as assigned.
  8. Collaborate with local school administrators for driver evaluations.
  9. Organize school bus evacuation drills with local schools.
  10. Maintain driver documentation regarding illegal bus passing incidents.
  11. Promote high standards of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency in transportation operations and work environments.
  12. Drive buses and transport students when necessary.
  13. Adhere to all traffic laws and driving safety regulations.
  14. Perform duties in a courteous and professional manner.
  15. Ensure cleanliness of vehicles and office areas.
  16. Report all incidents immediately to the transportation office and other relevant officials; follow established procedures related to incidents and post-incident activities. Report driving citations (personal or school system vehicle) to the Transportation Director.
  17. Maintain cooperative and appropriate relationships with students, parents, community members, and colleagues.
  18. Attend scheduled training sessions.
  19. Demonstrate ability and willingness to respond to emergency or after-hours assignments on nights, weekends, or holidays.
  20. Maintain and report a working contact number for supervisor communication.
  21. Uphold confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
  22. Exhibit initiative in identifying potential issues and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
  23. Report potential issues, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel.
  24. Respond to inquiries, requests, and constructive feedback in a timely and positive manner.
  25. Maintain and submit reports, records, and correspondence accurately and punctually. Proficient in word processing, spreadsheet applications, and computer skills.
  26. Properly utilize and care for equipment and material resources of the educational system and effectively supervise and monitor others in the care, maintenance, and use of equipment and inventory.
  27. Promptly report all mechanical needs to the appropriate personnel.
  28. Comply with educational system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local laws.
  29. Report absences and take leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
  30. Perform other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor.
Terms of Employment: As established by the Board and applicable state law.

Evaluation: Performance will be assessed in accordance with the Board's policy on personnel evaluation.
