PRIMARY FUNCTION

The T-38 Avionics Systems Specialist is responsible for diagnosing issues, inspecting, maintaining, and installing integrated avionics systems. This role involves overseeing avionics maintenance and general aircraft servicing and handling.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Evaluates equipment performance to identify issues in avionics systems, integrated test systems built-in-test (BIT), multiplexed data bus systems, recording systems, video display systems, mission computer systems, electronic warfare (EW) systems, and sensors.
  • Handles the removal, installation, inspection, and repair of avionics systems and line replaceable units (LRU).
  • Diagnoses problems using technical manuals, schematics, wiring diagrams, integrated test systems, and other diagnostic tools.
  • Conducts operational assessments and repairs or replaces damaged components and systems.
  • Manages the removal, replacement, and repair of defective system wiring, electrical connectors, antennas, transmission lines, and multiconductor cables.
  • Modifies avionics systems in accordance with technical documentation.
  • Inspects, troubleshoots, and maintains aircraft electrical and electronic systems, subsystems, components, and related testing equipment.
  • Assists in T-38 aircraft jacking, lifting, mooring, and towing operations.
  • Maintains operational logs, inspection records, aircraft documentation, and automated maintenance systems.
  • Performs and supervises alignment, calibration, and boresight of avionics systems.
  • Uploads maintenance and operational software.
  • Conducts off-equipment maintenance on selected avionics LRUs and maintains specialized support equipment (SE).
  • Inspects and verifies the operational status and configuration of avionics systems and software.
  • Interprets inspection results and assesses the adequacy of corrective measures.
  • Checks components for clearances, tolerances, proper installation, and functionality.
  • Reviews maintenance documentation, aircraft records, automated maintenance data systems, and historical reports to ensure comprehensive record-keeping.
  • Suggests methods to enhance equipment performance and maintenance processes.
  • Utilizes automated maintenance systems to input, validate, and analyze data.
  • Inspects, resolves, and finalizes completed maintenance discrepancies in automated systems.
  • Documents maintenance activities in compliance with Quality Assurance (QA) and established regulatory standards.
  • Handles hazardous waste and materials in accordance with environmental regulations and company protocols.
  • Maintains inventory of alternate mission equipment and aircraft components.
  • Employs automated maintenance systems to track maintenance trends, analyze equipment needs, maintain records, document actions, and manage time change databases.
  • Conducts regular Foreign Object Damage (FOD) inspections.
  • Ensures strict tool control procedures are followed, reporting any missing or damaged tools to the supervisor.
  • Adheres to safety regulations during daily maintenance tasks, promptly reporting any accidents, injuries, or safety violations to the supervisor.
  • Maintains equipment records, documenting the work performed and verifying satisfactory completion.
  • The T-38 Avionics Systems Specialist may be required to undertake additional duties to support the organization's ongoing needs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
  • Expertise in electrical, electronic, and mechanical principles related to avionics systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering documents, wiring diagrams, blueprints, and technical manuals.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to communicate issues effectively to management.
  • In-depth knowledge of mechanical, wiring, and electronic circuit diagrams; electronic, micro-processor, data bus, and mechanical principles theory and application.
  • Familiarity with T-38 flight theory, gyros, indicators, antennas, and digital computer systems.
  • Understanding of Air Force Technical Order system, supply procedures, and deficiency reporting protocols.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and willingness to learn additional software applications.
  • Ability to accurately enter data into databases and produce routine reports.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with all levels of management and staff.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills to convey information clearly.
  • Proficient in using general office equipment.
  • Ability to follow established processes and procedures.
  • Exceptional customer service skills, including active listening and prompt follow-up.

  • Background in TCTO application is advantageous.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • 6+ years of experience in tactical aircraft avionics systems with fixed/rotary wing commercial, Government, or DOD aircraft.
  • Previous experience in Air Force Specialty Code 2A5X3 Aircraft Avionics Systems is highly desirable.
  • Multi-faceted aviation qualifications and certifications are essential.
  • Experience supporting DoD contracts.
  • Strong understanding of commonly used concepts and practices in depot-level maintenance.
  • FAA Airplane and/or Powerplant certification is a plus.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Government Security Clearance.
