Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Alabama (Class B or above) Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger and school bus endorsements.
The primary aim is to ensure the safe transportation of students to and from educational institutions and related activities. Responsibilities include managing student behavior, maintaining a secure and tidy bus environment, monitoring vehicle performance, and reporting any mechanical concerns.
Key Responsibilities:
The following responsibilities are typical for this position. They are not exhaustive and additional tasks may be assigned.
- Adhere to all traffic laws, safety regulations, and policies concerning school buses as mandated by Federal, State, and local authorities, as well as the policies of the Alabama Department of Education.
- Conduct daily inspections of the bus in accordance with state standards to ensure safety for student transport.
- Verify that all communication devices are functioning properly.
- Safely transport students according to the designated bus route.
- Maintain discipline and safety standards on the bus; instruct students on regulations such as remaining seated at all times and not extending body parts outside the bus; prepare discipline reports as necessary.
- Guide and instruct students on appropriate boarding and unloading procedures.
- Ensure the bus is adequately fueled.
- Submit maintenance requests for repairs as needed.
- Regularly update the bus stop roster and student information sheets.
- Participate in mandatory State Certification training annually for school bus drivers.
- Educate passengers on the emergency evacuation plan as outlined in the emergency procedures.
- Maintain an up-to-date seating chart for the schools served and the transportation department.
- Prepare and keep an emergency data card for all students assigned to the bus for accountability and emergency situations.
- Responsible for submitting all required documentation (Daily Bus Inspection form and related bus route documents) by deadlines set by the Director of Transportation.
- Communicate effectively and professionally.
- Prepare reports for any injuries occurring on board.
- Document statements for insurance purposes in the event of a motor vehicle accident involving the school bus.
- Notify the supervisor immediately if you become insulin-dependent or if your license is revoked or suspended.
- Must possess the following while operating a school bus: Proper license, DOT Certificate, vehicle registration, Daily Bus Inspection sheet, and vehicle insurance information.
- Successfully complete the DOT Medical Exam Report or the Alabama School Bus Driver Examination Report biennially.
- Recertification of CDL license is required annually.
- Perform additional tasks and assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Principal and/or Director of Transportation.
Carry out other duties as assigned.
Performance Evaluation:
Job performance will be assessed in accordance with the Board's policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.

Specific vision abilities required by this position include close, distance, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
