The Family Engagement Specialist plays a crucial role in connecting, supporting, and empowering families with youth who are exhibiting at-risk behaviors within the community. This position requires clear communication with all family members while respecting and valuing their cultural backgrounds and beliefs. The individual in this role will oversee services provided by various agencies and seek informal support systems for families, including recreational activities, mentoring, and connections with faith-based communities if desired by the family. Proficiency in learning and utilizing new computer systems and programs is essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate the strengths and needs of children, youth, and families.
  • Support families in achieving their Plan of Care (POC) objectives.
  • Encourage families to take ownership of their care plans.
  • Integrate family values and cultural aspects into personalized service coordination planning.
  • Manage a diverse caseload of up to twenty (20) families, ensuring that meeting frequency aligns with planning needs.
  • Work independently and meet with families at their convenience, which may include early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
  • Establish and maintain strong partnerships with service agencies and providers.
  • Guide families in developing a comprehensive plan to: clarify issues; provide emotional support; identify needs and strengths; and locate resources, including suitable services, entitlements, community resources, and other natural supports.
  • Assist families and youth in building their own community-based support networks, ensuring their goals are integrated into a cohesive plan as necessary.
  • Collaborate with Care Coordinators throughout the Wraparound process, including intake, engaging family members, forming a child and family team, and participating in team meetings. Execute all assigned tasks within the POC framework.
  • Ensure that families are equal partners in the planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of their care plans.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Personal experience as a primary caregiver for a youth with significant behavioral or mental health challenges is essential. Preference will be given to those who can articulate their experiences in identifying needs and accessing available services.
  • Previous experience in assisting families to secure appropriate services and supports for their children and family members is preferred.
  • Familiarity with state and local resources, particularly within early childhood service systems, is advantageous.
  • Strong active listening skills to provide non-judgmental peer support and engagement with families.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary.
  • A valid Maryland driver's license and access to a personal vehicle are required; in-state travel is part of the role.
