Job Title: Vice President, Land and Habitat Conservation

Job Summary:

The Vice President, Land and Habitat Conservation will lead Defenders' efforts to conserve lands and habitats critical to protecting and maintaining biodiversity nationwide. This role will ensure effective on-the-ground implementation of federal and private land and habitat conservation programs outlined in Defenders' strategic plan, conservation priorities, and conservation campaigns.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement land and habitat conservation strategies to achieve Defenders' strategic goals and priorities.
  • Lead Defenders' advocacy efforts to influence legislation, regulatory processes, and agency policies impacting land and habitat conservation.
  • Collaborate with federal agencies, Congress, state agencies, tribes, and other stakeholders to ensure consideration of climate change impacts on biodiversity in land and habitat management nationwide.
  • Work with private landowners, land trusts, and other stakeholders to promote sound wildlife conservation on private lands.
  • Represent Defenders in public meetings, hearings, press events, conferences, coalitions, and general communications with public officials, legislators, the news media, Defenders' membership, the donor community, and the public.
  • Develop and manage budgets, staff, and resources to achieve land and habitat conservation goals.
  • Ensure optimum performance for individuals and group functions, recommending and implementing techniques to improve productivity, increase efficiencies, and maintain state-of-the-art practices for the department.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field required; advanced degree preferred.
  • 15 years of experience, with 7 years of supervisory experience and 5 years of managing 2+ layers.
  • Expert-level knowledge of Defenders' legal, scientific, and/or political issues.
  • Expert-level knowledge of national and regional social, political, and ecological landscapes.

Working Conditions:

This role is based in Washington, DC or Denver, CO, and requires frequent travel to meet with stakeholders, attend meetings, and conduct fieldwork.
