Job Title: Vice President, Lands and Habitat Conservation

Defenders of Wildlife seeks a highly skilled and experienced Vice President, Lands and Habitat Conservation to lead our efforts in conserving lands and habitats important to protecting and maintaining biodiversity nationally.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead Defenders' work to conserve lands and habitats important to protecting and maintaining biodiversity nationally.
  • Ensure effective on-the-ground implementation of federal and private land and habitat conservation programs described in Defenders' strategic plan, conservation priorities, and conservation campaigns.
  • Develop and promote incentives to conserve biodiversity on federal, state, tribal, and private lands and waters.
  • Influence federal, state, and tribal administrative and legislative initiatives impacting wildlife habitat and other natural resources.
  • Work on federal, state, and tribal land management issues impacting sensitive wildlife species.
  • Maintain and enhance the ecological integrity of priority wildlife habitat.
  • Maintain and enhance the conservation of biodiversity in general.
  • Provide leadership and support for outreach efforts, with a priority on implementing Defenders' diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice values.
  • Work closely with the President & CEO, Senior Vice President of Conservation Programs, Vice President for Species Conservation & Coexistence, and other senior leadership.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field required; advanced degree preferred.
  • 15 years of experience, 7 years of supervisory experience, and 5 years of managing 2+ layers.
  • Expert-level knowledge of Defenders' legal, scientific, and/or political issues.
  • Expert-level knowledge of national and regional social, political, and ecological landscapes.
  • Ability to foster a team and organizational culture that models the tenets of the Commitment Statement.
  • Ability to connect employees and their work to Defenders' mission.
  • Ability to set and maintain clear expectations, ensuring clarity of roles, accountabilities, and responsibilities.
  • Ability to ensure that staff have the skills and support required to perform at the highest level.
  • Ability to create and maintain a diverse, inclusive, and high-functioning environment.
  • Ability to prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion in department and organizational-level decisions.
  • Ability to manage employee conflict and resolve escalations in an inclusive and healthy manner.

  • Ability to provide effective feedback in real-time.
  • Ability to create and implement team and organization-wide strategies in support of Defenders' Strategic Plan.
