About The Bail Project

Challenge:

The criminal justice system often equates financial means with freedom, where individuals unable to pay bail remain incarcerated pre-trial, while those with resources secure their release. This system undermines the presumption of innocence and exacerbates social and economic inequalities, contributing significantly to mass incarceration.

Our Solution:

The Bail Project is a national nonprofit dedicated to providing complimentary bail assistance and pretrial support to low-income individuals. Our mission is to combat mass incarceration and advocate for a fairer, more just pretrial system.

Our Approach:

Utilizing a national revolving bail fund, The Bail Project pays bail for individuals presumed innocent and deemed eligible for release by a judge. We also offer court reminders, transportation, and collaborate with local organizations to connect clients with essential social services and community programs. This model, known as Community Release with Support, has shown significant success in ensuring court attendance.

Our Team:

We are a collective of advocates striving to end mass incarceration and promote racial and economic justice. Our organization includes a central support hub and a network of local advocates, referred to as "Bail Disruptors," who provide bail assistance and support advocacy efforts in their communities.

Role Overview:

The Legal Counsel/Assistant General Counsel will be integral to the General Counsel's Office, providing legal representation and guidance to The Bail Project. This role involves supporting the General Counsel in various key functions, including:

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Draft and review a range of contracts and agreements;
  2. Conduct legal research and offer advice to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations;
  3. Assist in the recruitment and management of external legal counsel;
  4. Collaborate with outside counsel to formulate litigation strategies;
  5. Support corporate governance, registration, and compliance across jurisdictions;
  6. Advise on proposed policy initiatives;
  7. Provide legal counsel in various areas of general law;
  8. Work with the COO to develop user-friendly policies and procedures for legal compliance;
  9. Coordinate with Communications, Marketing, and Development Teams to ensure compliance in communication strategies;
  10. Facilitate training for staff on legal topics relevant to the General Counsel's Office;
  11. Address incoming legal inquiries and concerns;
  12. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. Juris Doctorate from an accredited U.S. law school (required);
  2. Active legal license in any U.S. state or territory (required);
  3. 1 to 5 years of relevant legal experience (required);
  4. A minimum of three years of experience is required for the Assistant General Counsel position;
  5. Experience with nonprofit corporate and tax issues is advantageous;
  6. Meticulous attention to detail;
  7. Strong ethical standards;
  8. Experience in a major law firm, in-house legal department, or nonprofit organization is preferred;
  9. Familiarity with federal and state laws applicable to 501(c)(3) organizations is preferred;
  10. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills;
  11. Strategic thinker with the ability to foresee challenges;
  12. Capacity to meet tight deadlines and manage multiple tasks efficiently;
  13. Willingness to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment;
  14. Commitment to addressing issues through a lens of racial justice and equity;
  15. Demonstrated dedication to the mission and values of The Bail Project.

This position is fully remote. The Bail Project will provide necessary equipment for remote work, but candidates must have reliable internet access.

Compensation and Benefits:

This is a full-time, exempt position.
