About The Bail Project
The Challenge
The criminal justice system often ties liberty to financial resources, leaving those unable to afford bail incarcerated before trial. This situation undermines the presumption of innocence and exacerbates racial and economic inequalities, contributing significantly to mass incarceration.
Our Mission
The Bail Project is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free bail assistance and pretrial support to low-income individuals. Our goal is to challenge mass incarceration and advocate for a more just and equitable pretrial system.
Our Approach
Utilizing a national revolving bail fund, The Bail Project pays bail for individuals presumed innocent and eligible for release. We offer additional support, including court reminders and connections to community services, through our Community Release with Support model, which has proven effective in ensuring court attendance.
Our Team
We are a dedicated group of advocates focused on ending mass incarceration and promoting racial and economic justice. Our organization comprises a central support hub and a network of local advocates who provide bail assistance and engage in advocacy efforts.
