Open Plans is a non-profit organization dedicated to reshaping the experience of urban life in New York City. Our mission focuses on grassroots advocacy and policy initiatives aimed at prioritizing human connection, creativity, and environmental sustainability over the dominance of private vehicles.

Position Overview

We are in search of a dedicated professional who can strategically enhance our policy and legislative initiatives through effective organizing, both in-person and online. This role involves collaborating with a dynamic team of advocates who engage with various stakeholders, including community boards, local leaders, residents, educational institutions, and partner organizations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a proactive and supportive senior member of the organizing team, fostering collaboration, mentorship, and innovative thinking regarding Open Plans' campaigns.
  • Explore both traditional and innovative approaches to broaden our outreach to diverse audiences, including students, seniors, and community residents, to cultivate a network of advocates.
  • Effectively communicate our initiatives and engage with the community in meaningful ways, ensuring clarity and relevance in our outreach efforts.
  • Identify and connect with individuals passionate about livability and public spaces, encouraging their involvement in neighborhood improvement efforts.
  • Facilitate attendance at community meetings and events by directly reaching out to potential advocates.
  • Share insights and feedback on community issues with the Open Plans team, supporting various campaigns and initiatives.
  • Utilize your network to enhance Open Plans' connections and expand our impact across the city.
  • Provide guidance and support to junior organizing staff, with potential for future team management.

Qualifications

  • Seven to ten years of relevant professional experience, preferably in community engagement or organizing.
  • Self-motivated individual with strong emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to unite groups around shared objectives.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
  • Experience in hosting community meetings, rallies, and delivering public testimony.
  • Genuine passion for the mission of Open Plans.
  • Comfortable interacting with elected officials, city agencies, and community partners.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Creative and critical thinking abilities to devise various strategies for achieving goals.
  • A collaborative team player.
  • Familiarity with New York City and State government structures and politics.
  • Bilingual communication skills are advantageous.
