New York, New York, United States New Yorkers United for Child Care Full time

New Yorkers United for Child Care is a newly established organization dedicated to achieving universal child care for all families with children under 5 in New York City and State. Our approach emphasizes community mobilization, as we believe empowering parents and prospective parents is essential for securing victories for families.

We are seeking a Lead Community Organizer. This individual will be our second full-time team member, collaborating with the executive director to develop the organization. They will assist in expanding our city-wide membership of over 50 grassroots leaders and enhancing our presence in key neighborhoods.

We are looking for a self-driven, sociable Lead Community Organizer to create our organizing framework, conduct outreach, and spearhead base building, training, education, and leadership development among parents and prospective parents in New York. This role involves engaging members in city and state campaigns and coalitions aligned with our mission. The Lead Community Organizer will also facilitate neighborhood and city-wide in-person meetings on weekends—when parents are available—ensure child care options are provided, and implement ongoing leadership development training throughout the year.

Key Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of the Lead Community Organizer include but are not limited to:

  • Base Building - Organize and establish a canvassing operation to build individual contacts of New Yorkers (primarily parents and would-be parents) wherever they are (at playgrounds, grocery stores, subways, etc.) who we can then engage as leaders.
  • Leadership Development - Regularly hold one-on-one meetings with members to cultivate their investment in the organization and our mission, retain and engage current leadership, and ensure their ideas and concerns are incorporated into our work.
  • Organize and Facilitate Monthly Neighborhood and City-Wide Membership Meetings on weekends. These meetings are opportunities for members to learn about local political processes, how to win, connect to local representatives, and engage in strategic brainstorming.
  • Coordinate Child Care for members to participate in events.
  • Coordinate Community and Press Events and connect grassroots members with reporters.
  • Meet with Elected Officials and train and recruit leaders to effectively participate in these meetings.
  • Create Promotional and Educational Materials.
  • Actively Participate in Organizational Planning with the Executive Director.

Skills, Abilities & Qualifications:

  • 5 years of previous experience working as a community organizer or in a similar role.
  • Strong interest in empowering New Yorkers to advocate for a more livable and affordable city and state.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Outgoing personality with the ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Positive, proactive, and personable team player.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Familiarity with social media and digital communication is preferred.

Note that this position will follow a hybrid work schedule. Applicants must have the ability to commute to our office, as well as travel throughout New York City during business hours, evenings, and weekends, and occasionally to Albany. In the event of weekend work, we are committed to ensuring employees have two days off per week.

NYUC is committed to applying a racial equity lens to our work. We value diversity, equity, and inclusion, and welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds including race, ethnic culture, gender expression, age, sexual orientation, and physical abilities.
