Role Description

The Transport Security Directorate (TSD) collaborates across the Department for Transport, HMG, and with partners to address the threats faced by the transport sector both domestically and internationally. We spearhead significant initiatives to enhance and implement the transport sector's cybersecurity, maritime, and aviation security frameworks while engaging with global partners to elevate standards and build capabilities.

We seek individuals with a scientific background to join the National Security Science and Research (NSSR) Division of TSD. This is a highly active team operating in a fast-paced environment. We deliver evidence-based scientific and technical guidance across various disciplines, from physics and chemistry to engineering, human factors, and ergonomics, while supporting responses to security incidents within the transport network.

  • Act as the subject matter expert for a specific research theme, with the actual technical area depending on your skills and qualifications. Examples include computational model design and interpretation, systems engineering, data management, threat detection technologies, and risk assessment across all transport modes, providing support and guidance to both the NSSR division and policy colleagues.
  • Oversee the commissioning, execution, and utilization of transport security research and development initiatives.
  • Conduct technical reviews and interpret data to provide evidence-based recommendations to security policy leaders.
  • Forge effective partnerships with expert counterparts across Whitehall Departments and intelligence agencies.
  • Influence and leverage related international research and development efforts, including representing the UK in discussions with partner nations.
