Role Description

The Transport Security Directorate (TSD) collaborates across the Department for Transport, HMG, and with partners to address the threats faced by the transport sector both domestically and internationally. We spearhead significant initiatives to enhance and implement cyber security, maritime, and aviation security frameworks while working with global partners to elevate standards and build capabilities.

We seek individuals with a scientific background to join the National Security Science and Research (NSSR) Division of TSD. This team operates in a fast-paced environment, providing evidence-based scientific and technical guidance across various disciplines, including physics, chemistry, engineering, human factors, and ergonomics, while supporting responses to security incidents affecting the transport network.

Your responsibilities will include leading thematic research and development projects in transport security and serving as a liaison between NSSR and our transport security policy teams. You will initiate and manage a variety of technical projects aimed at understanding threats to transport and proposing and assessing strategies for threat mitigation or impact reduction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the subject matter expert for a designated research theme, with the specific technical area depending on your skills and qualifications. Examples include computational model design, systems engineering, data management, threat detection technologies, and risk assessment across all transport modes, providing support and guidance to both the NSSR division and policy colleagues.
  • Oversee the commissioning, execution, and utilization of transport security research and development initiatives.
  • Conduct technical reviews and data interpretation to provide evidence-based recommendations to security policy leaders.
  • Establish effective partnerships with expert counterparts across Whitehall Departments and intelligence agencies.
  • Influence and leverage related international research and development efforts, including representing the UK in discussions with partner nations.

Candidate Profile

To excel in this position, you should:

  • Have experience in a scientific or technical domain, including leading or overseeing technical projects.
  • Understand the intersection of science and technology in security contexts.
  • Possess the ability to manage relationships with teams and stakeholders effectively.
  • Have a track record of making informed decisions to meet requirements.
  • Be capable of communicating scientific concepts to non-technical audiences.

Additional Information

A minimum of 60% of your working hours should be spent at your primary workplace, although attendance at other locations for official duties or detached assignments in other DfT workplaces will also contribute to this attendance level.

This role will necessitate UK travel approximately twice a month, with opportunities for occasional international travel. Travel expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with departmental policies.

These positions require SC clearance, with the willingness to undergo DV clearance in the future if necessary.

Qualifications

A formal qualification in a STEM subject at least at degree level or equivalent experience is required.
