Position Description

The Transport Security Directorate (TSD) collaborates across the Department for Transport, Her Majesty's Government, and various partners to address the threats faced by the transport sector both domestically and globally. We spearhead significant initiatives aimed at enhancing the transport sector's cyber security, as well as maritime and aviation security frameworks, while also engaging with international partners to elevate global standards and enhance capabilities.

We are seeking individuals with a scientific background to join the National Security Science and Research (NSSR) Division within TSD. This team operates in a high-energy environment, providing evidence-based scientific and technical guidance across diverse disciplines, including physics, chemistry, engineering, human factors, and ergonomics, while also supporting responses to security incidents within the transport network.

Your responsibilities will include leading thematic research and development projects focused on transport security, acting as a liaison between NSSR and our transport security policy teams. You will initiate and manage a variety of technical projects aimed at assessing threats to transport and proposing and evaluating strategies for threat mitigation or impact reduction.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the subject matter expert for a designated research theme, with the specific technical area dependent on your expertise and qualifications. This may include computational model design, systems engineering, data management, threat detection technologies, and risk assessment across all transport modes, providing support and guidance to both the NSSR division and policy colleagues.
  • Oversee the commissioning, execution, and utilization of transport security research and development initiatives.
  • Conduct technical reviews and interpret data to provide evidence-based recommendations to security policy leaders.
  • Establish effective partnerships with expert counterparts across government departments and intelligence agencies.
  • Influence and leverage related international research and development efforts, including representing the UK in discussions with partner nations.

Candidate Profile

To excel in this position, you should:

  • Have a background in a scientific or technical domain, including experience in leading or overseeing technical projects.
  • Understand the intersection of science and technology in the context of security.
  • Demonstrate the ability to manage relationships with teams and stakeholders effectively.
  • Have a track record of making informed decisions to meet project requirements.
  • Be skilled in communicating scientific concepts to audiences without technical backgrounds.

Additional Information

It is expected that a minimum of 60% of your working hours will be spent at your primary workplace, although attendance at other locations for official duties may also be required.

This role will involve UK travel approximately twice a month, with opportunities for occasional international travel. Travel expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with departmental policies.

Successful candidates will be required to obtain SC clearance, with the potential for DV clearance in the future if necessary.

Qualifications

A formal qualification in a STEM subject at degree level or equivalent experience is required.
