Los Angeles, California, United States Blue Origin Full time
Position Overview:

At Blue Origin, we are dedicated to creating a future where humanity thrives in space for the benefit of our planet.

Our mission focuses on developing safe, reusable, and cost-effective space vehicles and systems, fostering a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusivity.

We invite you to join our diverse team of innovators as we embark on new adventures in space exploration.

This role is situated within the Lunar Transportation division, responsible for advancing Blue Origin's various Blue Moon lander product lines.

To support our vision of enabling millions to live and work in space, we are establishing sustainable infrastructure for transporting crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

As a key member of our dedicated engineering team, you will play a vital role in defining and developing thermal control systems for spacecraft.

The ideal candidate will thrive in a dynamic and often unpredictable environment, contributing innovative solutions while showcasing leadership, technical expertise, and meticulous attention to detail.

This opportunity is for a Thermal Analysis Manager within the Thermal Integrated Product Team (Thermal IPT) of the Lunar Transportation division.

Your responsibilities will include leading either the Component-level or System-level Thermal Analysis teams within the Thermal Analysis group.

Approximately 20-30% of your time will be devoted to team management activities (such as hiring, performance evaluations, and mentoring), while the remaining 70-80% will focus on your role as a senior thermal analyst (individual contributor).

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the Component-level or System-level Thermal Analysis teams within the Thermal Analysis group.
  • Oversee personnel management, including performance reviews and training.
  • Recruit, hire, and mentor a diverse and inclusive team.
  • Facilitate the professional development of your direct reports through coaching and performance management.
  • Ensure the delivery and quality of thermal analysis for various spacecraft systems/components, coordinating the efforts of multiple analysts.
  • Develop thermal models using Thermal Desktop (for system-level) or ANSYS Icepak (for component-level) based on inputs from external teams.
  • Forecast spacecraft and component temperatures throughout all mission phases.
  • Identify and resolve non-compliance issues related to thermal requirements.
  • Conduct trade studies and optimize thermal design solutions while collaborating with external IPTs.
  • Document thermal analysis findings and present them during program reviews.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant thermal analysis experience with Thermal Desktop or ANSYS Icepak.
  • Expertise in heat transfer principles within a space environment.
  • Strong familiarity with common spacecraft thermal hardware.
  • Ability to build trust and maintain professional relationships, contributing to an inclusive culture.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or legally admitted refugee/asylee.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • At least 2 years of experience managing technical teams or leading functional groups.
  • 8+ years of experience in thermal analysis for spacecraft systems.
  • Solid understanding of pumped fluid loop hardware and semi-passive devices.
  • Familiarity with agile project management methodologies.
  • Knowledge of thermal environments specific to lunar missions.
  • Experience with safety-critical aerospace vehicle certification processes.

Compensation:

Compensation ranges vary based on location and are competitive within the industry.

Inclusivity Statement:

At Blue Origin, we are committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace. If you are enthusiastic about this role but do not meet every single qualification, we encourage you to apply. You may be the perfect fit for this or other opportunities.

Benefits:

We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, paid parental leave, short and long-term disability, a 401(k) plan with company matching, and an Education Support Program.

Our paid time off policy includes up to four weeks per year and up to 14 company-paid holidays.

Discretionary bonuses are available to reward individual contributions and allow employees to share in company success.
