Position Overview:
Become a vital part of one of the leading academic medical institutions, UChicago Medicine, as a Labor Relations Specialist.

Your role will focus on implementing strategies that enhance employee performance and foster a positive work environment.

This position offers a hybrid work model, and we are looking for candidates who are local or open to relocation.

Key Responsibilities:


In this capacity, you will address complex inquiries from executives, managers, and staff regarding specialized topics.

We seek an individual dedicated to delivering exceptional service to all employees by swiftly addressing inquiries through a case management system.

You will also provide training and guidance to Tier 1 employee service representatives to ensure adherence to established protocols and enhance service delivery.

Identifying and communicating opportunities for process improvements for Tier 1 representatives and the broader HR community will be essential.

You will escalate unresolved issues to the appropriate parties and interpret standard administrative procedures to resolve intricate employee inquiries or challenges.

Core Functions:

Employee Relations Consultation:

Offering guidance to management and staff in resolving escalated employee relations matters in line with existing HR policies.

Conducting initial interviews, documenting findings and recommendations, and advising management on handling employee performance issues through disciplinary measures (e.g., verbal or written warnings, terminations).


Interpretative Guidance on CBAs and HR Policies: Collaborating with the Employee and Labor Relations Center of Excellence to provide interpretative guidance on collective bargaining agreements, HR policies, past practices, employment laws, and other regulatory requirements.

Employee Investigations:
Managing investigations related to employee or management incidents or complaints, including high-risk or complex cases requiring thorough investigation.

Legal Support for Employee Matters:
Crafting position statements and other documentation for employment-related claims. Collaborating with legal counsel to prepare necessary documentation for negotiations and settlements. Providing support during arbitration, including identifying witnesses and preparing required documentation.

Employee Appeal Procedures:

Acting as the Step 3 hearing officer for union grievance processes, conducting follow-up investigations, and drafting responses.


Training Initiatives:

Assessing training needs and delivering sessions on employee relations topics, including collective bargaining agreements and relevant HR policies.


Severance and Separation Agreements:
Overseeing the preparation of severance agreements in accordance with policies, calculating payouts, and managing claims.

Employee Relations Tracking:
Documenting and entering employee relations-related data into tracking systems, including monitoring disciplinary actions.

Performing additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required:

- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or a related field
- Strong customer service and leadership skills
- Knowledge of HR governance including employee relations and employment laws
- Ability to operate independently on complex issues
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Proficiency in software applications (e.g., Word, Excel, email)

Preferred:

- Five or more years of HR experience in a healthcare setting
- Certifications such as PHR or SPHR
