The HYBRID role of Reliability Engineer requires expertise in mechanical design and analysis, with a particular emphasis on component reliability. Familiarity with the operation of piping and valve components, along with knowledge of inspection techniques, is essential. Experience with rail tank car valves and running gear components is advantageous. The successful candidate will possess skills that enhance GATX engineering's data analytics and reliability analysis initiatives, along with the capability to formulate and implement reliability strategies and projects from a strategic viewpoint. This position will utilize data analysis to influence regulatory bodies and industry standards in favor of GATX's business objectives, significantly impacting Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost metrics.

Key Responsibilities

Enhance the reliability of life-cycle maintenance for the GATX rail fleet:
  • Evaluate and monitor key fleet performance indicators to drive strategic enhancements in GATX's SQDC (Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost).
  • Establish and track quantitative metrics for fleet reliability objectives.
  • Employ Weibull++ and other reliability software to oversee GATX's reliability initiatives.
  • Refine scheduling and standard operating procedures for planned maintenance activities.
  • Assess needs and mitigate unplanned maintenance occurrences.
  • Facilitate the integration of reliability improvements into GATX's guidelines, specifications, reporting, IT systems, policies, and processes.
Support GATX Operations' strategic goals through data analysis and execution:
  • Create and sustain reliability reports and dashboards utilizing PowerBI.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of engineering programs concerning SQDC impact.
  • Eliminate systemic defects affecting maintenance quality through Quality Assurance.
  • Assist Best Practice teams in demonstrating measurable impacts on SQDC.
Assist GATX Commercial with fleet performance data analysis:
  • Analyze trends in maintenance costs.
  • Provide analytical support to clients regarding qualification intervals and comparative analyses of components.
Influence regulatory and industry standards in GATX's favor, and assist with compliance requests:
  • Shape regulatory outcomes through reliable data metrics, participation in industry committees, and leadership in task groups.
  • Support Service Reliability Assessments as requested by regulatory authorities.
  • Deliver forecasts on the impact of proposed regulatory changes.
  • Validate the effectiveness of GATX tank car qualification and remediation initiatives with regulatory officials.
Collaboration:
  • Engage with executive and staff members in engineering, quality assurance, information services, and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with regulatory bodies and industry associations.
  • Work alongside GATX's Vice President of Government and Industry Affairs.
  • Coordinate with fleet management, investment analysis, and sales teams.
Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:
  • B.S. or M.S. in Engineering or a related technical field, with a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel at an advanced level.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft PowerBI.
  • Strong background in statistics and formal data analysis methodologies.
  • Certification in reliability engineering data analysis and modeling.
  • Experience with rail car design and repair is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with rail car regulations and standards is a plus.
Additional Information: This position is based in a hybrid model, requiring 60% in-office attendance. Minimal travel to maintenance facilities and industry meetings may be necessary, and candidates must be physically capable of climbing on, inside, or under rail cars.
