The High Power Electromagnetics Division (HPEM) at SARA, Inc. is in search of a highly skilled, driven, and imaginative Pulsed Power Engineer to enhance our rapid Research & Development (R&D) initiatives. The HPEM team leads advancements in energy delivery systems, from primary power sources to practical applications. This role offers the chance to grow, lead, and collaborate with talented engineers, physicists, and technicians on both ongoing and new projects supporting the Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Energy (DoE), and their affiliates.

We seek a Pulsed Power Engineer with a keen interest and expertise in pulsed power systems, RF technologies, power electronics, high-speed diagnostics, and high voltage insulation. The position encompasses a diverse array of stimulating tasks involving high voltage (ranging from 1 to hundreds of kilovolts) and high frequency (from 60 Hz to 10 GHz) equipment. A robust understanding of electromagnetic principles and power electronics theory is essential, along with hands-on experience with hardware.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong teamwork and leadership capabilities, possess excellent communication skills, and exhibit creativity and resourcefulness. They should be prepared to guide engineers in a multidisciplinary engineering context. Essential qualifications include experience in detailed design and analysis of high-power switching technologies, pulsed forming networks, high voltage insulation, compact and repetitive pulsed power systems, SPICE simulation, and protection and filtering circuits. Familiarity with power electronics, capacitor chargers, electromagnetics, microelectronics, and thermal design is advantageous.

Key Requirements:

  • 5+ years of experience with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Pulsed Power, Power Electronics, High Power Solid-State Switching, Applied Electromagnetics, or High Voltage (1 to hundreds of kilovolts).
  • Ability to effectively communicate experimental methodologies, data, and analyses in written form, as well as deliver technical presentations in person.
  • Proficient in collaborating with team members and managing multiple tasks to achieve project goals.
  • Experience with basic data acquisition tools such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, network analyzers, voltage and current probes, and spectrum analyzers.
  • Willingness to travel extensively (2-3 weeks consecutively several times a year).
  • Physical capability to perform light tasks, including standing, sitting, and manual handling of up to 50 pounds.
  • Indoor working environment that is moderately quiet, clean, well-lit, and ventilated, with some moderate physical hazards.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Top-Secret security clearance.
  • U.S. Citizenship is mandatory.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience (excluding education) with a Master’s or PhD in Power Electronics, Pulsed Power (including Marx Generators, Pulsed Forming Networks, Inductive Voltage Adders, Linear Transformer Drivers, Accelerators, etc.), High Power Microwaves, High Power RF, EMI Protection, High Power Solid-State Switching and Packaging, Power Conditioning, DCDC & ACDC Power Conversion, High Voltage (1 to hundreds of kilovolts), Protection Circuits, High-Speed Communication Circuits, and Digital and Analog Controls, Power Magnetics, Gate Drives, I/O Interface Circuits, and System-Level Design & Integration.
  • Experience with FDTD EM and Multiphysics simulation software, preferably COMSOL Multiphysics.
  • Proficiency in data processing software such as Excel, MATLAB, Python, Mathcad, and Origin.
  • Experience in drafting technical and cost proposals.
  • Active DoD TS or DoE Q clearance.

Salary Range: $80,000 - $166,000, dependent on experience.
