About the Department:
The Student Wellness department at the University of Chicago is dedicated to addressing the primary and urgent health care needs of the student population. Our services encompass various specialties, including general internal medicine, family practice, gynecology, sports medicine, travel medicine, and minor urgent care.
Position Summary:
Under the guidance of supervising professionals, the Practical Nursing Specialist is responsible for delivering a broad spectrum of nursing care services. This includes evaluating patient conditions, documenting clinical observations, and conducting vital signs and laboratory tests.
Key Responsibilities:
- Evaluate patient conditions before and after medical treatments and procedures.
- Accurately document clinical observations.
- Alert supervising physicians regarding any unstable patient conditions.
- Measure and record vital signs.
- Conduct point-of-care testing, including urine dipsticks, glucose tests, rapid strep tests, and urine pregnancy tests.
- Perform EKGs, nebulization treatments, basic visual acuity assessments, ear and eye irrigations, PR fit tests, phlebotomy, and other specimen collections.
- Administer medications via oral, intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular routes.
- Respond to patient requests for prescription refills and referrals, adhering to established nursing protocols.
- Examine, clean, and dress wounds, bites, and burns.
- Remove sutures and apply various bandages and splints.
- Assist patients with mobility and transport in urgent situations.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of examination rooms and nursing stations.
- Manage linen supplies, ensuring proper distribution and cleanliness.
- Prepare and transport instruments for sterilization.
- Monitor and reorder medical supplies as necessary.
- Provide clinical support to patients and healthcare providers.
- Conduct telephone triage and offer medical advice to patients.
- Schedule patient appointments efficiently.
- Enter patient information into electronic medical records accurately.
- Collaborate consistently with registered nurses, multidisciplinary team members, and physicians to enhance patient care quality.
- Implement cost-effective practices to optimize resource utilization.
- Foster a positive work environment that encourages staff morale and commitment.
- Demonstrate the ability to work under the supervision of registered nurses or physicians.
- Follow instructions and respond constructively to feedback.
- Adapt to changes in the ambulatory care environment and actively participate in team meetings.
- Prepare patients and necessary equipment for specific procedures, providing assistance as needed.
- Collect and document patient data for medical records, noting significant changes in condition.
- Perform additional related duties as required.
Education:
Completion of vocational training or equivalent experience in a related field is required.
Experience:
A minimum of 5-7 years of relevant work experience is necessary.
Certifications:
Active LPN license in the State of Illinois and CPR certification are preferred.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in an ambulatory or hospital care setting.
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office, and experience with electronic medical records.
Preferred Competencies:
- Knowledge of patient care fundamentals and aseptic techniques.
- Ability to provide respectful and professional direct patient care.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Capability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Discretion and confidentiality in handling sensitive information.
- Problem-solving skills using reasoning principles.
Working Conditions:
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
- Frequent use of computers for extended durations.
- Potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious materials.
- Compliance with health screening and vaccination requirements.
