Practical Nursing Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY: The Practical Nursing Specialist is tasked with delivering direct patient care to residents while overseeing the daily nursing functions carried out by nursing aides. This oversight must align with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations governing our facility, as well as directives from the Director of Nursing to ensure the highest quality of care is consistently upheld.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Supervise the daily activities of nursing aides. Collaborate with assigned nursing staff and support personnel to plan shift services, programs, and activities.
2. Prepare written and verbal reports/recommendations regarding shift activities as necessary. Manage the admission, transfer, and discharge processes for residents.
3. Provide leadership and guidance to nursing staff assigned to your unit/shift.
4. Complete and maintain required documentation upon resident admission, transfer, and/or discharge. Accurately receive and transcribe physician orders, documenting them on the appropriate forms.
5. Maintain thorough and descriptive nursing notes that reflect the care provided and the resident's response.
6. Fill out and submit incident reports to the Director as required. Conduct routine charting duties in accordance with established policies and procedures.
7. Administer medications as prescribed by physicians.
8. Foster a positive working relationship with inter-departmental personnel and other facility departments to ensure that nursing services meet resident needs.
9. Create and sustain an environment of warmth, personal interest, and positivity, ensuring a calm atmosphere throughout the unit and during shifts.
10. Conduct rounds with physicians as necessary and provide nursing reports during shift changes.
11. Deliver professional services such as catheterization, tube feedings, suctioning, dressing changes, and other nursing tasks as required.
12. Monitor nursing staff to ensure compliance with established safety regulations regarding equipment and supplies.
13. Uphold the confidentiality of all resident care information, including protected health information, and report any known or suspected breaches.
14. Provide IV care and manage IV sites as needed.
15. Perform additional duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Licensed Practical Nurse with current, unrestricted state licensure.
- Proficient in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding the English language.
- Capable of making independent decisions when necessary.
- Knowledgeable about nursing and medical practices, as well as laws and regulations relevant to nursing care facilities.
- Current CPR certification is mandatory.
- Experience in Long-Term Care is preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to move throughout the workday.
- Capacity to manage the mental and emotional demands of the role.
- Must meet general health requirements set by facility policies, including medical and physical examinations.
- Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry a minimum of 25 pounds to a height of at least 5 feet and a distance of 50 feet.
- May be required to assist in resident evacuations during emergencies.
