Reports to: Director of Nursing & Assistant Director of Nursing

Overview:

In alignment with our mission to enhance the quality of life for our Guests, the Practical Nursing Specialist (P.N.S.) is essential in delivering exceptional nursing care and customer service to all individuals under our care.

The P.N.S.

is responsible for overseeing staff and ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of all Guests through adherence to relevant laws, regulations, and established nursing protocols.

Key Responsibilities:

1.

Deliver high-quality nursing care to Guests in a setting that upholds their rights, dignity, and freedom of choice.

2.


Supervise Certified Nurse Aides (C.N.A.) and other subordinate staff, ensuring that tasks are completed effectively.

3.

Allocate assignments to C.N.A.s and other staff members.

Manage break schedules and special assignments.

4.

Administer parenteral, intramuscular, and subcutaneous injections.

5.

Dispense medications within the scope of L.P.N. licensure.

Maintain accurate records of narcotics received and administered.

6.

Review documentation related to controlled substances daily, ensuring compliance with inventory regulations.

7.

Order pharmacy supplies, administer newly prescribed medications, and document accordingly.

8.

Conduct direct charting during shifts and prepare detailed monthly evaluations of each Guest's condition and progress.

9.

Assume responsibility for the nursing care of assigned Guests during shifts.


Notify relevant personnel of any significant changes in a Guest's condition or hospital transfers.

10.

Ensure adherence to Guest care plans and assess each Guest's status in line with their care plan.

11.

Collaborate with physicians as necessary.

12.


Administer or oversee all treatments prescribed by physicians, including pressure ulcer care and catheter management.

13.

Supervise the serving of prescribed diets and fluid intake, reporting any concerns to the physician and nursing leadership.

14.


Maintain knowledge of individual care plans and contribute to the care planning process by sharing observations of Guests' needs and preferences.

15.

Provide wound care as required.

16.

Complete medical records documenting care provided in accordance with nursing policies while ensuring confidentiality.

17.

Adhere to established infection control and safety practices when delivering care.

18.

Report hazardous conditions, damaged equipment, and supply shortages to appropriate personnel.

19.


Uphold the comfort, privacy, and dignity of Guests, interacting with them in a manner that reflects warmth and respect.

20.

Respond promptly and courteously to call lights.

21.

Assist with new admissions and transfers within the facility.

22.

Communicate effectively with Guests, families, peers, and supervisors.

23.

Participate in departmental meetings and training sessions as directed.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
This role includes direct supervisory responsibilities for Certified Nurse Aides and other assigned personnel.

Work Environment:
This position operates within a healthcare setting, requiring regular movement throughout the facility.

This role may involve exposure to patients with contagious illnesses.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate effectively.

This position is physically demanding, requiring standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting patients and items weighing at least 75 pounds.


Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:
This role is part of a healthcare facility operating 24/7.

Rotating shifts, including holidays and inclement weather, are required.

Required Education and Experience:
1.

High school diploma or equivalent.

2.

Graduation from an accredited nursing program.

3.

Current State License as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

4.

C.P.R. Certification

Preferred Education and Experience:
1.

One year of experience as an L.P.N. in a long-term care environment.

2.

One year of experience as a C.N.A.

Additional Qualifications:
1.

Familiarity with Joint Commission procedures.

2.

Knowledge of IDPH regulations.
