Key Responsibilities:
The Practical Nursing Specialist II is dedicated to delivering direct patient care and actively seeks to enhance patient outcomes by incorporating Shared Leadership, Evidence-Based Practice, and standards of nursing excellence into everyday clinical practice.
Through building therapeutic relationships with patients, families, and colleagues, the Practical Nursing Specialist II plays a vital role as a member of the interdisciplinary team, ensuring quality patient care and contributing to the achievement of unit and organizational objectives.
Clinical Duties:
- Completes mandatory orientation and unit-specific training.
- Assists in patient assessments as directed by the registered nurse by observing, collecting, and reporting patient data.
- Collaborates with the registered nurse to develop nursing care plans based on continuous patient observations and family input.
- Executes physician orders and performs prescribed interventions, documenting all actions accurately in the electronic medical record.
- Engages with other healthcare team members to facilitate effective patient care.
- Identifies symptoms, prioritizes needs, and responds to the evolving requirements of patients.
- Involves patients and families in educational planning to ensure understanding and compliance.
- Demonstrates commitment to the Medical Center's values through teamwork and effective communication, aiming for quality outcomes and patient safety.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Professional Development:
- Advocates for patients, families, and the nursing profession.
- Integrates theoretical knowledge and evidence-based research to deliver high-quality patient care.
- Supports Shared Leadership as a method of nursing governance.
- Participates in departmental and organizational leadership activities, aligning daily actions with unit goals.

Education and Research Contributions:
- Collaborates with nursing staff to foster positive learning experiences for both staff and students.
- Serves as a resource for nursing staff and students.
- Accesses internal resources for updates on policies and procedures relevant to practice.
- Supports nursing and multidisciplinary research initiatives within the Medical Center.
- Takes initiative for ongoing professional growth by identifying learning needs and pursuing development strategies.
Reporting Structure:
This role operates within the scope of practical nursing as defined by relevant regulations and under the guidance of a physician or registered nurse (RN). The Director/Manager provides mentorship and performance feedback, with regular evaluations to support professional development.
Qualifications:
Minimum requirements include:
- A valid Licensed Practical Nurse license issued by the appropriate regulatory body.
- At least six months of nursing experience in a healthcare setting.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and other necessary unit-specific credentials.
- Effective communication skills to foster therapeutic relationships.
- Intermediate computer skills with the ability to learn the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
- Strong attendance and interpersonal skills.
