Publishing Strategy Associate

Position Overview:
We are in search of a proactive Associate Managing Editor who will play a pivotal role in the growth and strategic advancement of select journals within the American Physiological Society (APS). The ideal candidate will possess a keen eye for detail, strong decision-making abilities, and the capacity to foster relationships with diverse stakeholders to support the mission of APS Publications.
Key Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the strategic enhancement of assigned APS journals, striving to elevate their visibility within the scientific community.
- Collaborate with the Editor-in-Chief, Associate Editors, and the APS publications team to implement strategic plans aimed at journal growth.
- Demonstrate creativity and strategic thinking while effectively communicating innovative ideas.
- Manage the peer review process to ensure a high-quality experience for authors, reviewers, and editors.
- Work autonomously to enhance the reputation of APS journals and maintain their competitive edge in the market.
- Identify emerging research areas and develop Calls for Papers and content collections in collaboration with the editorial team and Guest Editors.
- Oversee commissioned content and collaborate with the marketing department to curate social media content for journals.
- Monitor journal performance, track editorial activities, and organize meetings with the editorial team.
- Manage special projects, including the production of journal-specific podcasts and initiatives to support early career researcher reviewers.
Required Competencies:
- Experience in scholarly publishing, particularly in scientific or medical contexts.
- Strong understanding of editorial processes and scientific peer review.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, for diverse audiences.
- Strong organizational skills to balance daily tasks with long-term projects.
- Ability to prioritize effectively to meet deadlines while collaborating with cross-functional teams.
- Proficient in data analysis related to journal and editorial team performance.
- Familiarity with peer review management and team collaboration platforms.
- Experience in social media engagement to connect with the journal community.
- Highly motivated with strong networking skills and editorial insight.
- Commitment to supporting the APS mission of empowering discovery to improve health.
Work Environment:
This position supports a remote-first work culture, with occasional in-person meetings to foster collaboration and team cohesion.
