Job Responsibilities

The Chief Staff Attorney's Office is seeking a dedicated Legal Assistant to provide essential paralegal support to Staff Attorneys in the preparation of appeals for judicial review and resolution. Responsibilities include managing cases during the petition phase of the appeal process: receiving assigned cases from the Clerk's Office, organizing and allocating cases for court presentation, overseeing the scheduling of the Court's Writ Panel dockets, and ensuring timely reporting of dispositions to the Clerk's Office.

Maintain case flow through the case management system and facilitate communication with the Clerk's Office.

Research and Administrative Support

Provide research and administrative assistance as directed by the Chief Staff Attorney. Engage in the procedural review of appeals and present requests for continuance and motions to the Court.

Training and Development

Assist in onboarding new attorneys and interns, providing guidance on office procedures, computer applications, and Court rules and requirements.

Benefits

This position offers a comprehensive benefits package, including vacation and sick leave, 12 paid holidays, health insurance, retirement plans, life insurance, deferred compensation, and both short- and long-term disability coverage.

Minimum Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a competent working knowledge of legal terminology, court procedures, case management systems, and document management systems. Familiarity with appellate rules and regulations is advantageous.

Strong written and verbal communication skills, effective time management, and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively are essential. Candidates must demonstrate efficiency in a fast-paced environment, adaptability to changing priorities without close supervision, and effective interaction with Court staff and the public.

Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel is required, along with a solid understanding of databases, cite-checking, Lexis, and other legal research tools.

Additional Considerations

A bachelor's degree or paralegal certificate is preferred; however, an equivalent combination of training and experience that demonstrates the required qualifications may be considered.

Application Process

Applicants will receive confirmation of receipt upon successful submission of their application and/or résumé. To check the status of your application, please refer to "Your Application" in your account.

A résumé, cover letter, and references are mandatory for consideration.

Inclusivity Commitment

The Commonwealth encourages individuals with disabilities to apply through the Commonwealth Alternative Hiring Process. To be considered for this opportunity, applicants will need to provide their AHP Letter from the Department for Aging & Rehabilitative Services or the Department for the Blind & Vision Impaired. Service-Connected Veterans are encouraged to disclose their Veteran status and submit relevant documentation to obtain their AHP Letter.
