Position Overview

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a skilled Paralegal to enhance its Consumer Protection Section. Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive litigation and investigative assistance to attorneys within the Charitable Solicitations and Deceptive Conduct Unit, as well as the broader Consumer Protection Section.
  • Oversee the management of documents and evidence collected from various sources, ensuring proper organization through Bates-stamping, indexing, reviewing, coding, scanning, copying, and filing.
  • Assist in the preparation of responses to discovery requests and conduct telephone interviews with consumers and witnesses, documenting findings through memoranda and affidavits.
  • Support trial preparation by organizing exhibits, witness subpoenas, and maintaining trial notebooks.
  • Conduct thorough searches of public, governmental, and proprietary records to locate witnesses and gather pertinent information on investigative targets or defendants.
  • Manage litigation and investigation files, including data entry into case management systems, tracking litigation deadlines, and maintaining an organized pleadings index.
  • Facilitate the distribution of restitution to consumers, including correspondence and check mailing, and ensure compliance through review of reports and collaboration with third-party administrators.
  • Monitor and summarize discussions from multistate working group conference calls.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants should possess a solid understanding of legal terminology, court procedures, case management systems, and document management practices. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, along with effective time management abilities. Candidates must demonstrate the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively, managing large volumes of information efficiently in a dynamic environment. A minimum of 5 to 10 years of litigation paralegal experience is preferred. A bachelor’s degree or a paralegal certificate is required, although a combination of relevant training and experience may be considered. Candidates should also exhibit the ability to engage effectively with a diverse workforce and the public. Proficiency in personal computer applications, particularly Microsoft Word, Excel, databases, and legal research tools, is essential.
