About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Custodian at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. As a key member of our facilities team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the cleanliness and maintenance of our gardens and facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Cleaning and Sanitation: Clean, sanitize, and restock restrooms, including sinks, toilets, and showers, using established practices and procedures.
  • Facilities Maintenance: Clean, dust, and wipe furniture; sweep, mop, or vacuum floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets; empty/clean wastebaskets and trash containers; wash accessible interior and exterior windows; clean blinds; wash walls and equipment; collect recycling materials. Launder cleaning rags and dust mops.
  • Event Support: Assist with the setup of facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences, and events.
  • Communication: Maintain radio communication with Facilities and other internal teams.
  • Inventory Control: Assist with maintaining organization and inventory control system.
  • Security: Lock and unlock assigned buildings: secure building when facilities are not in use, checking for unlocked doors and windows, report any unauthorized occupants, turn off lights.
  • Seasonal Tasks: Perform seasonal cleaning and related activities such as removing snow or debris from sidewalks and stairs using hand-operated tools or small power equipment.
  • Emergency Response: Attend to emergencies or unforeseen circumstances when necessary, including but not limited to event set-up and weather clean-up.
  • Team Participation: Participate in Gardens-wide initiatives including Gardens Aglow assignments.
Requirements
  • Attention to Detail: Keen attention to detail while holding a high standard of quality.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with guests, co-workers, and supervisors.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work in a team environment, being aware of and accepting of teammate's strengths and weaknesses.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to stand and walk up to four hours at a time, to stoop and reach as needed.
  • Basic Computer Skills: Basic computer literacy and use of programs such as email and schedules.
  • IDEA Commitment: Commitment to working across the organization to support the integration of IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility) principles into CMBG's internal operations and its relationships with visitors and guests.
Physical Requirements
  • Work Environment: Work is performed indoors and outdoors in the full range of climatic conditions.
  • Lifting and Carrying: Pounds employee is required to lift: 50 lbs, Pounds employee is required to carry: 25 lbs.
  • Distance Carried: Usual distance carried: up one flight of stairs or out to an outdoor venue.
  • Physical Activity: Frequent to continual standing and walking, frequent repetitive motion tasks (sweeping, mopping, dusting).
