Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Laboratory Specimen Processor to join our team at Waterbury Hospital. As a key member of our Laboratory department, you will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth processing of patient specimens for testing.

Key Responsibilities
  • Process patient specimens and prepare them for testing by the Laboratory departments, including patient registration, test ordering, labeling, and centrifugation.
  • Enter patient registration information into the Hospital Information System (HIS) from paper registration forms or by direct interview with patients.
  • Recognize incomplete information on Laboratory requisitions and take proper steps to resolve the issue.
  • Prioritize processing of specimens and perform all aspects of specimen handling, including labeling, accessioning, and centrifugation, according to established procedures.
  • Evaluate specimen integrity and correctly handle specimens to expedite the testing process.
  • Process specimens for reference laboratory testing and arrange for courier service as needed.
  • Enter and/or verify test results from reference laboratory testing.
  • Maintain work areas in a sanitary condition and perform equipment maintenance as scheduled.
  • Follow Universal Precautions at all times.
  • Answer phone inquiries regarding specimen collection and handling and/or patient test results.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of both HIS and Laboratory Information System (LIS), including downtime procedures for both computer systems.
  • Promote effective working relationships and work effectively with coworkers to facilitate the department's ability to meet goals and objectives.
  • Keep current on advances in Laboratory Services and participate in and share continuing education to maintain professional development and competency.
Requirements
  • High School graduate
  • Prior Laboratory experience preferred
  • Phlebotomy skills helpful, but not required
  • Basic computer skills and ability to access internet and other programs applicable to Waterbury Hospital procedures
  • Ability to interact with internal and external customers with tact and confidentiality
  • Ability to adapt in a dynamic environment, including exposure to all patient elements, such as bloodborne pathogens, physical requirements: lifting, and carrying supplies, standing, walking, and bending
