Position Overview:

We are looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic individual to join our research team as a Biological Scientist III. This position will entail providing both administrative and scientific assistance to the Principal Investigator (PI) and other laboratory staff. Our research is centered on investigating the interactions between neuronal circuits and metabolic processes in complex behaviors of rodents throughout their lifespan.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Research Coordination and Laboratory Management: Responsibilities include: 1) Collaborating with Burke and Maurer labs to prepare for IACUC inspections and ensure compliance with surgical protocols 2) Maintaining surgical and electrophysiological apparatus 3) Overseeing surgical procedure logs and related drug records 4) Communicating any issues with PIs as necessary 5) Ensuring compliance with EH&S, IACUC, and DEA regulations through oversight and training, ordering supplies, managing inventory, conducting radiation surveys, and supervising hazardous waste and biological safety protocols 6) Managing expenses and finances through invoicing and payment consolidation 7) Updating and maintaining the laboratory website using WordPress for trainee, alumni, research, and publication information.
  • Experimental Conduct: Duties include 1) Designing and executing new molecular protocols 2) Monitoring rodent feeding schedules and conducting body condition assessments during experiments 3) Administering drug injections and infusions for testing 4) Facilitating rodent behavioral training and testing sessions 5) Collecting electrophysiological data 6) Analyzing gene expression data 7) Interpreting and presenting data to the PI and conducting analyses as directed 8) Engaging in gene cloning activities.
  • Animal Care: Responsibilities include 1) Managing and maintaining transgenic animal colonies 2) Coordinating transfers from breeding cores and among other PIs utilizing this resource.
  • Survival Surgery and Postoperative Care: Assisting with surgeries for both Burke and Maurer labs, including electrode implantations, cannulations, and AAV administration. Postoperative responsibilities include daily health monitoring, administering necessary medications, and consulting with veterinary staff as required. The primary surgeon will also be responsible for completing and archiving surgical logs.
  • Tissue Collection and Histological Analysis: Duties include 1) Performing euthanasia and perfusions for tissue collection 2) Conducting tissue sectioning (cryostat/vibratome) 3) Executing histological procedures including staining and immunohistochemistry.
  • Mentorship and Supervision: Taking a leadership role in training new trainees and undergraduate research assistants. Responsibilities include 1) Assisting with onboarding procedures (e.g., IACUC and EHS requirements) 2) Training students in proper rodent handling and behavioral testing 3) Supervising students post-training 4) Assisting students in data interpretation and analysis 5) Coordinating student schedules.


Expected Salary:

$68,000 - $71,000

Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree in biology or a related discipline with seven years of experience, or a Master's degree in biology or a related field with five years of experience. A Doctoral degree in biology or a related field with two years of experience is also acceptable.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong competency in research compliance and familiarity with GoIACUC and EH&S systems, experience in transgenic colony management, and basic molecular biology techniques.
