Position Summary:
Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance is on the lookout for an Underwriting Technician to join our Wholesale Property division. The Underwriting Technician (UT) will collaborate with the underwriting team to facilitate the underwriting process, engaging in tasks related to pre-quote, pre-bind, bind, and post-bind transactions.

The UT will also undertake additional underwriting support functions, including information gathering and rating for new business, renewals, and midterm policy adjustments. Furthermore, the UT will assist in preparing electronic files on behalf of the Underwriter.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist underwriters with all aspects of account development.
  • Create and maintain electronic files, ensuring their accuracy and integrity.
  • Coordinate policy issuance and collaborate with the Operations team.
  • Review broker submissions and verify the accuracy of required underwriting data.
  • Draft quotes and binders for review with underwriters.
  • Communicate with brokers and follow up on outstanding information.
  • Conduct valuation analyses on various types of occupancies using internal tools.
  • Collaborate with underwriters to compile and submit accounts for Catastrophe Modeling.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Underwriting and Operations teams.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • 1-5 years of experience in commercial insurance is preferred, with a focus on commercial property being advantageous.
  • Experience in E&S/non-admitted business is ideal but not mandatory.
  • Comprehensive understanding of policy construction, issuance, and basic rating principles.
  • Familiarity with commercial property policy forms.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Proactive approach and ability to work effectively within a team environment.
  • Self-starter with the capability to support and enhance workflow processes.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to learn and grow within the role.
  • BA/BS degree or equivalent experience is preferred.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications.
