SUMMARY:
The Nutritional Services Assistant plays a vital role in delivering healthy meals in accordance with USDA/CACFP guidelines. This position collaborates with a Nutrition Manager and Health Manager to design menus and promote healthy eating habits.

Additionally, the role may involve completing necessary documentation to comply with federal food program regulations.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Execute responsibilities in alignment with HS Performance Standards, Content Area Plans, Vermont Child Care Licensing Regulations for Center-Based Child Care and Preschool Programs, NAEYC, and NEKCA Standard of Conduct.
  • Complete NEKCA Performance Evaluations, Professional Development Self-Assessment, and collaborate with a supervisor on an Individualized Professional Development Plan.
  • Recognize signs of child abuse and neglect and adhere to Vermont Mandated Reporter Law and program Child Protection Protocol.
  • Engage in center staff meetings, monthly content area meetings, pre-service, and in-services, applying relevant knowledge and skills in practice.

SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
N/A, this position does not supervise any staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist in preparing and displaying weekly menus at the center.
  • Transport and serve breakfast and lunch at scheduled times for enrolled children/staff and adults in the center, aiding in family-style service.
  • Ensure meals are spaced appropriately, at least 2.5 hours apart but not exceeding 3 hours.
  • Support children during mealtime as needed.
  • Help maintain cleanliness of dishes, utensils, and dining areas to uphold sanitary conditions and health standards.
  • Actively participate in program and family/child staffing as requested.
  • Prepare and serve snacks for children, parents/guardians, staff, and community members during playgroups according to the center's plan.
  • Plan and prepare afternoon snacks for enrolled children and staff in full-day programs.
  • Complete daily paperwork including Food Services Provider's Daily Attendance - Child and Adult, Meal Count Sheet, and CACFP Weekly Meal Record, submitting by month-end.
  • Submit Food Inventory paperwork quarterly and complete equipment inventory with end-of-month paperwork in May.
  • Adhere to sanitation requirements as per program and Early Childhood Program Licensing Regulations; complete and submit Monthly Sanitation Checklist.
  • Perform daily cleaning of the kitchen floor.
  • Provide a monthly menu to parents/guardians detailing daily offerings.
  • Coordinate with classroom staff to involve children in meal preparation and service on a rotating basis.
  • Plan and execute nutrition education activities with program staff for classroom and Early Head Start families according to the program's Nutrition Plan.
  • Facilitate breaks for classroom staff as per the center's plan.
  • Conduct training for kitchen volunteers/substitutes to familiarize them with food service routines, sanitation standards, and the program's Nutrition Plan.
  • Oversee the collection and maintenance of compost systems.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with parents/guardians.
  • Collaborate with the center team to collect and document non-federal share.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Education and Experience:
  • GED or High School Diploma.
2 years relevant experience.
Core Competencies:
  • Reliable transportation to fulfill job requirements.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Collaborate effectively as a team member.

Physical Exam/TB Screening Background Checks:
Employees in this role must undergo a background check in accordance with NEKCA policy, which may include verifying education, employment history, and criminal records.

Transportation Requirements:
This position requires employees to possess a valid driver's license and have access to reliable transportation.

Physical demands may include lifting heavy boxes, standing for extended periods, carrying trays, and performing repetitive tasks such as chopping, stirring, or cleaning.

Employees may be exposed to extreme temperatures, especially those working in kitchens near stoves, ovens, or grills.

Food service workers are expected to adhere to strict cleanliness and hygiene standards, including personal hygiene and maintaining a clean work environment.

Employees must comply with safety regulations, particularly in kitchens where there are potential hazards such as hot surfaces, sharp tools, and heavy equipment.
