Sterile Processing Technician Job Description

Under the supervision of the Director of Surgical Services, the Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for preparing and sterilizing equipment and instruments in a timely and accurate manner. This role requires a high level of attention to detail and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and sterilize equipment and instruments according to established protocols
  • Restock and decontaminate sterilization equipment and instruments
  • Collect and sort dirty equipment and instruments
  • Clean, repack, and sterilize instruments
  • Assemble trays, basin sets, packages, and instruments for sterilization
  • Decontaminate and restock case carts and surgical trays
  • Perform quality control checks to ensure sterilization equipment and instruments are functioning properly
  • Document sterilization cycles and label products with sterilization dates
Requirements:
  • A high school diploma or equivalent
  • A minimum of six months of experience in Sterile Processing or Operating Room Technician
  • Must possess Sterile Processing Certification or Certified Operating Room Technician within six months of hire
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Knowledge of sterilization supplies, equipment, and instruments
  • Knowledge of organizing, containing, and transporting items of varying compounds, textures, or quantities
  • Knowledge of transporting and disposing of hazardous materials and sharp objects according to hospital procedures
  • Knowledge of sterilization procedures of various equipment and instruments
  • Knowledge of wrapping and repackaging sterilized instruments
  • Skill in using sterilization equipment and instruments
  • Skill in arranging instruments on surgical trays
  • Skill in following written instructions and performing multiple tasks
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with others
