Lead Geotechnical Engineer in Mining Operations

WSP is looking for a Senior Civil/Geotechnical Engineer with expertise in mining to enhance our US Mine Waste team. This role offers the chance to engage in a variety of demanding mining, heavy civil, and geotechnical initiatives.
Your Contributions
- Overseeing the civil engineering design for mine waste containment solutions, including tailings and waste rock facilities, focusing on layout, site selection, and technical specifications.
- Executing diverse geotechnical engineering projects, including field investigations and laboratory testing, while interpreting data and conducting analyses.
- Directing complex geotechnical evaluations, emphasizing soil mechanics, stability, seepage, and thermal modeling for mine waste and water embankment structures.
- Managing projects to meet client-defined scopes, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality reports within budget constraints.
- Engaging in client relationship management and business development to foster growth.
- Leading multidisciplinary teams on various projects.
- Supporting technical proposals and design work packages tailored to client requirements.
- Supervising junior engineers and promoting their professional development.
- Staying updated on the latest advancements in geotechnical engineering practices.
- Collaborating with engineers and planners on federally and locally funded infrastructure projects.
- Upholding ethical decision-making regarding company resources and adhering to WSP's Code of Conduct.
- Taking on additional responsibilities as dictated by business needs.
Essential Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering or a closely related field.
- 5 to 7 years of relevant post-educational experience in engineering, with a focus on geotechnical design.
- Professional Engineer registration.
- Experience in heavy civil or earthworks projects and proficiency in relevant software tools.
- Strong foundation in soil mechanics and geotechnical principles.
- Proven skills in client interaction and business development.
- Project management experience with small to mid-sized projects, including scope definition and expense tracking.
- Excellent communication skills, capable of conveying ideas effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong self-management abilities, with attention to detail and the capacity to prioritize tasks in a dynamic environment.
- Ability to work independently while providing guidance to junior team members, ensuring adherence to quality assurance and quality control standards.
- Proficient technical writing skills.
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills to analyze data and derive effective solutions.
- Capability to direct field personnel such as subcontractors to ensure safe and efficient task completion.
- Experience in delegating responsibilities and leading project teams.
- Commitment to workplace safety and compliance with WSP's health and safety policies.
- Flexibility to accommodate project-specific schedules that may extend beyond standard work hours.
- Willingness to travel as required by project demands.
- Master's degree in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering.
- Experience in tailings management and heap leach facility design within the mining sector.
- Adaptability to work across various business sectors and perform diverse tasks on short notice.
- Enthusiasm for fieldwork and travel as necessary for project requirements.
