Position OverviewRole Summary:

The Pediatric Cardiac Ultrasound Specialist is accountable for executing both sedated and non-sedated echocardiograms, conducting stress echocardiograms, and providing transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) support to medical professionals. This role also involves performing preoperative and postoperative transthoracic echocardiograms (TTE) on patients with normal and congenital heart conditions, catering to a diverse patient demographic from neonates to adults.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Exhibit proficiency in the OneCHRISTUS Competencies, including self-leadership and collaboration with others.
  • Conduct diagnostic cardiac ultrasounds for both inpatient and outpatient settings, adhering to established clinical and quality standards.
  • Assist in intraoperative TEE procedures and provide support in the Cath lab or at the bedside.
  • Manage the performance, archiving, and calculations of all pediatric cardiac ultrasound imaging, ensuring optimal machine settings and patient positioning.
  • Utilize analytical skills to deliver high-quality imaging studies for both normal and complex congenital heart defects.
  • Adapt to various ultrasound technologies, software, and protocols as required.
  • Maintain effective communication with physicians regarding exam interpretations throughout the day.
  • Conduct quality control and quality improvement measures, along with routine maintenance of echocardiography lab equipment.
  • Ensure that lab supplies are adequately stocked and that workspaces are organized and sanitized.
  • Engage in continuous professional development by pursuing educational opportunities and maintaining required CEU credits.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and caregivers across the organization, upholding the core values of CHRISTUS Health.
  • Independently perform high-quality echocardiographic examinations, enabling accurate diagnoses of congenital and acquired heart conditions.
  • Understand and execute the complex requirements for echocardiographic studies, including necessary measurements and calculations.
  • Identify the indications and limitations of various exams and procedures.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in operating ultrasound equipment, including adjusting settings and selecting appropriate transducers.
  • Comprehend the principles of ultrasound physics and the dynamics of blood flow.
  • Conduct advanced echocardiographic exams, including 2D imaging and Doppler studies, recognizing both normal and abnormal anatomical structures.
  • Prepare and assist physicians with TEE procedures, showcasing a thorough understanding of anatomical views.
  • Draft preliminary reports promptly following examinations.
  • Participate in educational activities such as echo lectures, journal clubs, and case discussions related to cardiology.
  • Mentor new hires and contribute to the training of fellows and residents.
  • Engage in quality assurance and quality control of echocardiographic studies in line with established guidelines.
  • Seek opportunities for professional growth through seminars and continuing education activities.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Achieve certification in pediatric echocardiography within the designated timeframe post-hire.
  • Participate in after-hours and weekend on-call schedules as needed.
  • Exhibit the ability to work effectively with pediatric patients facing a range of complex medical and psychosocial challenges.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills and collaborate effectively within a dynamic healthcare environment.
  • Possess a detail-oriented mindset and the ability to follow precise protocols.
  • Learn to operate specialized cardiology ultrasound software and basic medical equipment.
  • Conduct high-quality scans on neonatal patients, including those with significant medical complexities.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Graduation from an accredited ultrasound technology program or a Bachelor's Degree in Biological Science is preferred.
  • Experience: A minimum of 3-7 years of recent experience in adult cardiac echocardiography and 1-2 years in pediatric echocardiography is required. Knowledge of congenital heart anomalies is essential for pediatric echocardiography specialists.
  • Certifications: Candidates must possess one of the following certifications: Certified Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (ARDMS), Certified Registered Cardiac Sonographer (CCI), Certified Registered Congenital Cardiac Sonographer (CCI), or Registered in Pediatric Echo by ARDMS. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is also required.
