Overview:

The Pediatric Cardiac Ultrasound Specialist is accountable for executing both sedated and non-sedated echocardiograms, conducting stress echocardiograms, providing transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) assistance to medical professionals, and performing preoperative and postoperative transthoracic echocardiograms (TTE) on patients with normal and congenital heart conditions. The role encompasses a diverse patient demographic, ranging from neonates to adults.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct inpatient and outpatient diagnostic cardiac ultrasounds adhering to ASE and/or IAC clinical and quality standards.
  • Assist in intraoperative TEE, TEE in the catheterization lab, or at the bedside.
  • Perform, archive, and calculate all pediatric cardiac ultrasound imaging utilizing appropriate machine optimization, probe selection, and patient positioning.
  • Employ critical thinking and a systematic approach to deliver high-quality studies for both normal and complex congenital heart defects.
  • Adapt to various ultrasound equipment, software, and protocols effectively.
  • Maintain communication with physicians throughout the day for exam interpretation.
  • Conduct quality control and quality improvement measures, along with daily operational maintenance of echocardiography lab equipment as per established protocols.
  • Ensure lab supply levels are maintained and that rooms and equipment are organized and ready for use.
  • Engage in continuous education and skills enhancement to maintain annual CEU credits.

  • Independently perform high-quality normal and complex pediatric echocardiographic examinations, enabling accurate diagnoses of congenital and acquired heart abnormalities.
  • Understand the intricate requirements for study completion, including necessary measurements and calculations to evaluate the anatomy and function of both normal hearts and those with congenital defects.
  • Recognize the indications and limitations of exams and procedures.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in operating various ultrasound equipment, including adjusting settings, selecting transducers, and utilizing advanced functionalities.
  • Comprehend the principles of ultrasound physics, blood flow dynamics, and the bioeffects of ultrasound.
  • Execute normal and complex echocardiographic exams, including 2D imaging, with the ability to identify normal and significant abnormal structures, as well as doppler exams.
  • Possess advanced knowledge of normal and abnormal anatomy and complete complex calculations such as M-Mode, 2D, and doppler recordings.
  • Set up equipment and assist physicians with TEEs independently, demonstrating a thorough understanding of normal and abnormal anatomical views.
  • Prepare preliminary reports promptly.
  • Participate in educational activities such as echo lectures, journal clubs, and case conferences related to Cardiology.
  • Mentor new hires and contribute to the training of fellows and residents.
  • Engage in discussions regarding studies with staff and physicians.
  • Participate in quality assurance and quality control of echocardiographic studies in accordance with ASE, IAC, and institutional policies.
  • Seek opportunities for professional development through seminars and CEU activities.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Achieve certification in pediatric echocardiography within two years of employment to be considered for advancement.
  • Participate in after-hours and weekend on-call schedules as required.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with pediatric patients facing a range of complex medical and psychosocial challenges.
  • Exhibit excellent communication skills and collaborate effectively within a dynamic, fast-paced healthcare environment.
  • Be detail-oriented, technology-savvy, and capable of following precise instructions.
  • Learn to operate ultrasound equipment with specialized cardiology software and manage basic equipment such as blood pressure monitors and pulse oximeters.
  • Perform high-quality scans on neonatal patients, including those weighing less than one pound with complex medical issues.
Qualifications:

A. Education/Skills

Graduation from an accredited ultrasound technology program or a Bachelor's Degree in Biological Science is preferred.

B. Experience

A minimum of 3-7 years of recent experience in adult cardiac echocardiography is required, along with 1-2 years of recent experience in pediatric cardiac echocardiography. Knowledge of congenital anomalies is essential for all pediatric echocardiography technicians.

C. Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications

Required Certifications:
Certified Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (ARDMS), Certified Registered Cardiac Sonographer (CCI), Certified Registered Congenital Cardiac Sonographer (CCI), or Registered in Pediatric Echo by ARDMS. BLS certification is also required.
