Aircraft Maintenance Specialist III Job Description

Aircraft Maintenance Specialist III is responsible for maintaining and repairing aircraft structures, structural components, and engines of complex to extreme difficulty.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintenance and Repair: Maintain and repair aircraft components, including flight controls, engines, hydraulics, pneumatics, fuel systems, and mechanical components.
  • Troubleshooting: Apply technical knowledge of airframe and power plant systems to determine equipment malfunctions.
  • Repair and Restoration: Apply technical expertise to restore equipment condition and operation.
  • Problem-Solving: Apply professional technical expertise and guidance to solve complex problems by interpreting technical data such as blueprints or manufacturers' manuals.
  • Documentation: Make entries in aircraft logs and records and provide guidance and technical expertise to lower-level technicians throughout all aircraft modifications and/or maintenance efforts.
  • Service and Lubrication: Service and lubricate aircraft and subsystems.
  • Preparation: Prepare aircraft for inspections and maintenance checks and services.
  • Inspections: Perform scheduled inspections and assist in performing special inspections.
  • Diagnostic and Troubleshooting: Perform limited maintenance operational checks and diagnose and troubleshoot aircraft systems using special tools and test equipment as required.
  • Tool Maintenance: Use and perform operator maintenance on tools, special tools, and aircraft ground support equipment.
  • Technical Guidance: Apply professional comprehensive technical expertise and guidance to solve moderate to complex problems by interpreting technical data/documentation such as blueprints, manufacturers' manuals, aircraft Technical Manuals, Maintenance information, and Action Messages and all technical guidance provided through government official representatives.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Perform other qualified duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • Leadership: Be able to prioritize workloads and lead teams through more complex aircraft relevant tasks.
  • Participation: Participate in operation checks as required.
  • Organizational Skills: Possess excellent organizational skills in prioritizing workload to meet aircraft delivery schedule.
  • Certifications and Experience: Required valid up-to-date A&P license and shall have five years aviation maintenance experience, five years rotary wing aircraft experience, and two years on the assigned MDS. All experience must be within the ten most recent years.
  • Alternative Requirements: If no A&P license, shall have five years aviation maintenance experience, five years rotary wing aircraft experience, and two years on the assigned Mission Design Series (MDS). All experience must be within the ten most recent years.
  • FAA Requirements: All mechanics assigned to perform maintenance on FAA certified aircraft must meet FAA requirements.
  • Technical Knowledge: Required to possess the level of experience necessary to inspect all required aeronautical type maintenance to be performed by skill class Mechanic I and must have a combination of experience to repair engines, sheet metal, structural, hydraulic, electrical, power train, and general mechanical maintenance of moderate difficulty, required to meet the assigned missions.
  • Electrical Theory: Required basic knowledge of electrical theory.
  • Aircraft Tools: Required thorough knowledge of aircraft unique tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, sheet metal brakes, and sheers.
  • Logistics and Records: Required working knowledge of making entries in aircraft logbooks & records, military technical publications, and the Army's Unit Level Logistics Aviation Information System, ULLSAE.
  • Sheet Metal and Structural Modification: Required thorough knowledge of aircraft sheet metal and structural modification and repair.
  • Electrical Systems: Required ability to determine functionality of non-complex electrical systems.
  • Aircraft Tools: Required detailed knowledge of aircraft unique tools such as cable tensiometers.
  • Tools and Toolbox: Provide own Tools/Toolbox. Tools must be shadowed in the toolbox and Etched with your PID.
  • Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
Clearance Requirements:
  • NACI(T1) Public Trust Security Clearance: Must be able to obtain and maintain a NACI(T1) Public Trust Security Clearance. Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization to work at this facility.
Preferred/Physical Requirements:
  • Lifting: Frequently lifts parts and equipment up to 25 pounds.
  • Lifting: Occasionally lifts objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Work Environment: Work is performed in Aircraft maintenance hangar that is moderately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Work could be performed outside as well.
  • Operational Circumstances: May be required to respond to a wide variety of operational circumstances, including extreme weather conditions and rudimentary infrastructure.
  • Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear.
  • Physical Demands: The employee frequently is required to walk; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
  • Physical Demands: The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, or balance.
  • Exposure: May be exposed to extreme noise from turbine and jet engine aircraft.
  • Exposure: May be exposed to fumes or airborne particles; may be exposed to electrical shock hazards or work near moving mechanical parts, vehicles, or aircraft.
  • Knowledge: Knowledge of military and/or company forms required by work specifications is a plus.
