Position Overview

At Stony Brook Medicine, our Patient Care Assistants play a crucial role in delivering compassionate support to our patients, their families, and visitors, ensuring the highest standards of integrity and respect.

Under the guidance of a Registered Nurse, Patient Care Assistants engage in regular communication with patients and their families to provide essential information regarding treatment processes and visiting hours. They also offer encouragement and support to individuals who may be feeling anxious or distressed.

Qualified candidates will exhibit outstanding communication abilities, interpersonal skills, and a solid understanding of patient care, effectively adapting to the evolving needs of patients while making decisions grounded in ethical principles and our commitment to excellence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with basic care tasks such as changing simple dressings, administering enemas, and performing irrigations as instructed.
  • Apply heat and cold therapies as directed, including hot water bottles and ice packs.
  • Document patient care and observations accurately.
  • Monitor vital signs including temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and respiration.
  • Support patients with daily living activities, ensuring a comfortable and conducive environment for treatment.
  • Provide assistance with feeding to ensure proper nutrition for those in need.
  • Help with personal hygiene tasks such as bathing, dressing, and grooming.
  • Uphold the rights, dignity, and confidentiality of all patients.
  • Occasionally perform light housekeeping duties related to patient care to maintain a clean and orderly clinical setting.
Qualifications

Nursing Assistant I: Required to possess or be able to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities during the probationary period.

Nursing Assistant II: Required to have at least one year of satisfactory full-time experience in providing basic treatment and patient care services under professional supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

New York State Certified Nursing Assistant license or certification from an accredited nursing aide training program, along with one year of patient care experience and a High School Diploma or GED.

This position may require adjustments in shifts and days as necessary. Additionally, it may involve the use of respiratory protection, which could restrict the wearing of facial hair.

Before starting, the selected candidate must complete a pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance, as well as pass a drug screening and background check.
