Position Overview

At Stony Brook Medicine, our Patient Care Technicians play a crucial role in delivering compassionate support to our patients, their families, and visitors, upholding the highest standards of integrity and respect.

Under the guidance of a Registered Nurse, Patient Care Technicians engage in regular face-to-face interactions with patients and their families to relay information regarding treatment protocols and visiting hours. They also strive to uplift and reassure individuals who may be feeling anxious or downcast.

Essential Responsibilities
The responsibilities of a Patient Care Technician may encompass, but are not limited to:

  • Changing basic dressings as instructed, administering enemas, douches, and irrigations as directed.
  • Applying hot water bottles, aqua K pads, ice packs, and compresses as needed.
  • Documenting care and patient behaviors as required.
  • Measuring and recording vital signs such as temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and respiration rate.
  • Assisting with daily living activities, personal hygiene, and other fundamental needs to foster a therapeutic and comfortable environment for patients.
  • Providing feeding assistance to ensure proper nutrition for those in need.
  • Assisting with bathing, dressing, dental hygiene, and nail care for patients.
  • Maintaining the rights, dignity, and confidentiality of all patients.
  • Occasionally performing light housekeeping and cleaning duties related to patient care to ensure a clean and well-supplied clinical environment.

Qualifications
Required:
One year of relevant full-time experience in providing basic treatment and patient care services under professional supervision.

Preferred:
Certification as a Nursing Assistant in New York State or completion of an accredited nursing aide training program, along with one year of patient care experience and a High School Diploma or GED.

Work Environment

Prior to the start date, the selected candidate must complete the following requirements:

  • Pass a pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Employee Health Services.
  • Complete an electronic reference check with at least three professional references.
  • Pass a drug screening.
  • Meet all regulatory requirements for pre-employment screenings.
  • Provide copies of any required New York State licenses or certifications.
