Position Overview
At Stony Brook University, our Patient Care Technicians play a crucial role in delivering exceptional and empathetic support to our residents, embodying the highest standards of integrity and respect.
Under the guidance of registered nursing staff, Patient Care Technicians engage frequently with residents to assist with daily living activities.
Ideal candidates will exhibit outstanding communication abilities, interpersonal skills, and a comprehensive understanding of resident care, effectively addressing the needs of our residents through ethical decision-making aligned with our Mission, Vision, and Values.
Responsibilities of a Patient Care Technician include, but are not limited to:
- Assist residents with daily living tasks, personal hygiene, and basic human needs to foster a therapeutic and comfortable environment within the facility.
- As instructed by nursing personnel, assist in moving, positioning, lifting, and transporting residents using various aids to enhance comfort and facilitate treatment.
- Engage in conversation with residents, encouraging their participation in treatment activities to promote positive attitudes towards recovery and rehabilitation.
- Occasionally transport residents and necessary supplies.
- Uphold residents' rights, dignity, and confidentiality at all times.
- Occasionally perform housekeeping and cleaning tasks related to direct care to ensure the facility remains clean, sanitary, and well-stocked.
- Participate in mandatory quarterly training sessions to maintain certification and fulfill re-certification requirements every two years.
Work Environment:
Work conditions may involve exposure to infectious diseases, bodily fluids, and other challenging elements such as accidents and illnesses. Employees may encounter unpredictable emergency situations and may be required to work irregular hours due to multiple demands.
Qualifications Required:
New York State Nurse Aide Certification.
Preferred Qualifications:
One year of experience in healthcare. One year of experience in long-term care. Proficient computer skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Essential Role:
This position is classified as essential due to the nature of the responsibilities involved.
In the event of an emergency, employees in this role are expected to remain on-site or report to work.
Stony Brook University operates a 24/7 skilled nursing facility.
As such, all roles may be subject to changes in scheduled days and shifts as needed to meet operational demands.
The use of vacation or personal leave during the initial six months of employment will require prior approval from Human Resources.
Before starting, the selected candidate must fulfill the following requirements:
- Successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance.
- Meet regulatory pre-employment screening standards.
- Provide three written references.
- Submit copies of required licenses/certificates.
