Safety and Compliance Officer

Mystic Seaport Museum is seeking a highly skilled Health and Safety Officer to join our team. As a key member of our staff, you will be responsible for ensuring a safe and secure environment for our visitors, staff, and collections.
Key Responsibilities- Health and Safety Management
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive health and safety policies and procedures.
- Conduct regular risk assessments and safety audits of museum facilities and exhibits.
- Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses, and implement corrective actions.
- Maintain records of safety inspections, incidents, and training programs.
- Compliance
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal health and safety regulations.
- Stay updated on changes in health and safety legislation and advise on necessary actions.
- Prepare and submit reports to regulatory bodies as required.
- Liaise with external health and safety consultants and authorities.
- Training and Education
- Develop and deliver health and safety training programs for museum staff and volunteers.
- Conduct orientation sessions for new employees focusing on health and safety protocols.
- Organize emergency response drills and simulations.
- Provide ongoing education and awareness programs to promote a culture of safety.
- Oversight of Security Department
- Manage relationship with museum's security vendor.
- Develop and implement security protocols to protect the museum's assets, visitors, and staff.
- Conduct regular security audits and inspections.
- Collaborate with security personnel to address any potential security threats or breaches.
- Ensure that security staff are adequately trained in emergency response and evacuation procedures.
- Emergency Preparedness and Response
- Review and maintain emergency preparedness plans, including evacuation procedures and crisis management protocols.
- Coordinate with local emergency services and participate in emergency planning activities.
- Serve as the point of contact for health and safety emergencies within the museum.
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, or a related field.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or equivalent certification is preferred.
- Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in a health and safety role, preferably within a cultural or public institution.
- Strong knowledge of health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Experience in training and development of safety programs.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- The role will require occasional evening and weekend work and availability when emergency issues arise.
- The Health and Safety Officer will spend time in both office and museum settings, both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.
- The position may involve some physical activities, including inspections and emergency drills.
